there is a video on the page too.

HUFFMAN, TX (KTRK) -- It was a potentially dangerous science lesson. Students at a local middle school saw who could drink the most milk. And some of them ended up sick.
Video of the so-called science lab, which happened right before the Christmas break, ended up on "You Tube" and now the teacher has been removed from the classroom. But some parents say that's not enough.
The video posted on YouTube (http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=news/local&id=5883266) may look like a college fraternity. It played out in an eighth-grade classroom. Huffman middle school students raced to see who could chug a gallon of milk in under an hour. Five students participated. Dozens egged them on and some even videotaped, all as the teacher watched and, as the videos shows, seemed to encourage.
Over the more than 15 minutes, a few of the kids got sick, some to the point of vomiting.

"He said, 'Mom, come look at what they did in this class,'" said Shirley
Banhagle saw the video of what happened in the advance placement science class. She was horrified.
"My son, thank God, he wasn't involved in this particular class, but that he's in a school that is allowing something so terrible to happen to these kids," said Banhagle.
Huffman Superintendent Doug Killian had a similar reaction when he saw the videos.
"I'm disturbed by it," he said. "It doesn't represent Huffman ISD."
Killian and the school's principal questioned the science teacher. They learned she called the potentially dangerous stunt a science lab to help kids learn the property of homeostasis.
"It's not acceptable," said Killian. "It doesn't represent Huffman ISD, either. That's why we're conducting a full investigation. We continue on that right now."
Banhagle hopes the lessons learned from the incident resonate with everyone in Huffman ISD.
"The district should pay closer attention as to what kind of curriculums are going on in those classes," she said.
None of the kids involved in drinking the milk required medical attention. A note went home to parents on Thursday. As for the teacher, she's suspended as the district investigates. The superintendent says he believes likely the teacher broke many rules, including endangering students and not supervising them properly.

oh man. Id get sooo sick.
why did they do that in the class..... I dont understand the reasoning...
who can drink the most milk isnt really science... unless you dissect what they throw up?
odd.

So you would be ok if your child's teacher had them do an experiment that caused them to vomit and that was the purpose of the experiment?

What was the purpose of it??? :dunno
I think that it was gone about the wrong way.....the teacher should have sent something home to the parents that she wanted to do this and she should have also informed the school.

Only if he forced them to. I don't see the big deal either. Unless it was for grades/points/extra credit or he forced them...

I can actually see how this situation probably developed. They were probably discussing it in class for whatever reason, that milk makes you throw up if you drink too much of it too quickly. Students probably didn't believe it or wanted proof or something, like kids do. Maybe the teacher thought it would be an interesting lesson about the science of the body's reaction to certain things, etc. :dunno

ETA: So long as it wasn't forced. If it was a voluntary thing... like IF you want to participate, etc.

I think the parents are mad because the school sponsored a "chugging contest" more than anything. I don't think its that big of a deal either. If they weren't forced then the only reason the parents could be mad is because of the obvious fraternity-type connotations.

I don't get why the parents are upset since it's not something that could REALLY hurt them... I'm sure the teacher didn't force them to participate, in fact thats probably the fun teacher that uses something other than the textbooks and videos made in the 70s to teach the kids! *gasp!*

I am just not ok with any of my kids teachers doing something that will make them physically ill. I don't see the educational merit. (unless it was a course on Urban Myth) I am all for teachers being "fun" and finding other ways of teaching that reach the students but not with making the kids vomit. Kids do enough stupid things on there own they don't need a teacher encouraging any kind of over drinking/eating contest.

For everyone that asked what the purpose of the experiment was, it was homeostasis.

http://www.answers.com/topic/homeostasis?cat=health

They could have illustrated that with salt water and cucumbers. No need to make children puke. That was stupid.

For a quick review, homeostasis is like where your body has to maintain a certain temp and so it might shiver or sweat to restore your body to the proper temp. I guess she was trying to show that your stomach can only hold so much and so it cramps when it's empty and you puke when you overfill it. That was still dumb as hell though.

I've actually watched this competition live.... when I was in highschool they did it at a summer camp.

It's the WORST thing ever. It's soooo incredibly dangerous.... the milk curdles in your stomach... we had 2 guys end up in the emergency room. One because he drank it and couldn't vomit.... and another because he couldn't stop vomiting. Both had to have their stomachs pumped.
