BERLIN (Reuters) - The owner of a small German computer company has fired three non-smoking workers because they were threatening to disturb the peace after they requested a smoke-free environment.

The manager of the 10-person IT company in Buesum, named Thomas J., told the Hamburger Morgenpost newspaper he had fired the trio because their non-smoking was causing disruptions.
Germany introduced non-smoking rules in pubs and restaurants on January 1, but Germans working in small offices are still allowed to smoke.
"I can't be bothered with trouble-makers," Thomas was quoted saying. "We're on the phone all the time and it's just easier to work while smoking. Everyone picks on smokers these days. It's time for revenge. I'm only going to hire smokers from now on."

actually here you can not be hired somewhere if you smoke. :yes where I was living before at the phone company they wouldn't hire you if you were a smoker or you lived with a smoker. :screwy

TOTALLY true. Adam was told by a headhunter that he would have to quit smoking before he could find a job because every job that he had for Adam required non-smokers. Thankfully Adam found a job that didn't care, because quitting smoking has been VERY hard for him.

Germany is funny how they are being the opposite of us. They actually started a campaign against obesity there. It's starting out with the same type of restrictions on fast food as we started with restrictions on tobacco.

I could see that easily turning into a lawsuit. Employers are not allowed to ask you ANYTHING about your personal life, because not hiring you for something you do on your own time is actually discrimination. Employers are not even allowed to ask you if you are married or have children for that same reason.

That's bullshit!

Last I heard, cigarettes were not illegal. Seems to me that our government loves making a ton of money on smokers (I can assure you that every time the State of Michigan is worried about the budget, the first thing they raise taxes on is cigarettes!) but are unwilling to give them any protection at all.

Things like this make me so mad. Guess I better light a cigarette.

The anti-smoking lobby in this country has been able to effect all of these smoking bans and are now suggesting that smoking is so intolerable that no one should be allowed to do it almost anywhere...

A smoker in America now can be prevented from smoking in or around his own home if it is a rented property, he can lose his job, he can lose custody of his children if the other parent is a non-smoker, and he can be denied life saving medical treatment because any smoking related illness can be called a "self-inflicted injury." Its actually frightening that discrimination against ANYONE on this level is okay in our country. So. Go Germany!

I really did understand the ban on smoking in resturants because I don't like smoke in my face while I eat, but they are just taking it too far. You shouldn't be denied access to your child or lose your job because of it. There is actually a town in CA that is trying to ban smoking in the ENTIRE TOWN including private residences.

I'm not a smoker, but I can see the dangerous connotations these kinds of actions have. It starts with a tiny little "freedom" such as smoking. In your own home. :no

smoking hinders employment GREATLY. They dont have to ask u if u smoke...if u smoke on breaks and whatnot...if they see and REALLY dont want a smoker working for them...they can FIND a reason to get rid of u. You would have to supply PROOF that u got fired or not hired because ur a smoker. That would be damn near impossible. ALSO, when ADVERTISING for open positions..they can request non-smokers.

its too controlling. freedom is what we value in this country.

however, people that smoke ARENT denied access to their children, they are (sometimes) denied custody because it is extremely harmful to the children. I can see the reasoning behind that.

Alcohol hinders imployment, too. But I haven't ever heard of anyone being fired or denied employment because they drank in the privacy of their own home.
