View Full Version : San Diego ladies... i have a question
Kindra 01-12-2008, 08:52 PM we might be heading that way. Can anyone tell me about San Diego? Like's, dislike's?
How is the housing, weather, traffic, people? Is it way exspensive there? is the housing allowence higher? Is there any cola for cali? How is the commisary or nex?
ANY INFO WOULD BE GREAT!
MelissaMc424 01-12-2008, 08:55 PM It's way expensive compared to where we were stationed before. BAH doesn't count for us since we're in housing, gas is usually higher here than a lot of places, as are groceries. Aside from that, the weather's great (but I miss seasons) and there are lots of things to do here.
DH is a CPO, so our BAH is 2072. No COLA for SD.. I wish. 32nd st. commy is the largest in the world, and is VERY nice. It just opened last spring.
usnwife1205 01-12-2008, 08:57 PM Kindra, we are also going to Cali.. Here is what I have on BAH rates.
BAH rates: http://perdiem.hqda.pentagon.mil/perdiem/bah.html
We are going to camp pendleton and might have to wait on housing and I found some awesome real estate people for renting homes out that are cheap... I don't know where you are going but I will give you the link...
militarybyowner.com and simperfihomes.com
as far as everything else.. I can't tell you I am stuck!
Kindra 01-12-2008, 08:58 PM Is housing worth it?
Kindra 01-12-2008, 09:01 PM wow, what zip code would i use for san diego?
MelissaMc424 01-12-2008, 09:02 PM Is housing worth it?
To me yes, it's most definately worth it! You get the house, all utilities, they do the landscaping, all maintenance, plus you get roadside assistance on your cars for FREE (within 5 miles of your house) roadside assistance covers, dead batteries, running out of gas, tire changes and now even towing (they pay the first $50 or something like that)
This is our first house with a garage... so DH was stoked about that..
Renting a townhome in our area of SD (we're on the Eastlake side of Chula Vista) would have taken almost all our BAH anyway... this area is very upscale.
MelissaMc424 01-12-2008, 09:02 PM wow, what zip code would i use for san diego?
mine is 91913... same BAH and all for SD area...you could also use 92124
Kindra 01-12-2008, 09:03 PM nevermind. it would be about 1860
Kindra 01-12-2008, 09:04 PM so there is a lot to do. Like what?
MelissaMc424 01-12-2008, 09:04 PM I totally forgot to mention, that being that there are so many bases in the area, you have 3-4 commissaries within 30 min. drive. Same with NEX's..
MelissaMc424 01-12-2008, 09:06 PM so there is a lot to do. Like what?
The zoo, sea world, lego land, balboa park (tons of museums), beaches, the wild animal park, TONS of shopping.. I live near 4 malls, 1 of which is an outlet mall. You're only about an hour to an hour and a half from Julian, which actually has seasons.. they get snow.
Dr. K 01-12-2008, 09:18 PM Can you apply for housing before you are married? Or do you have to wait till you are officially married?
Kindra 01-12-2008, 09:39 PM married first.

Aww.. :wub
The drivers are CRAZY out here.. plus you have to deal with the people who come across from Baja who can't drive.. I've gotten used to it in the last 9 months, but it took me a good while to find my groove out here.
Kindra 01-13-2008, 11:27 PM well i'm worried like a crazy woman about moving. I'm so afraid to be alone and it is just so much easier if someone could take me under their wing.
The housing market it nuts. What are the locations of the military housing. And are they terrible or good? Are people normally nice or hermits? And what about Day Care? Is it good or bad.
