....would you recommend for our living room once we move into the house? This is our living room set and we're sticking with it for a long time. The sofas are tan, but they have a very green undertone to them. The wooden feet of the sofas are black wood and our coffee table and recliner are both black leather. We have a somewhat modern style, but it's not too sleek and simplistic. We prefer "comfort." I hate doing plain white since we've never been able to paint our rooms before, and I really wanted to do a shade of blue, but I think with the green tints to our furniture, it may be better to go with a bit of green...I hate doing a tan/brown color though as the house has wood floors and brown trim and I want some color!!

***ETA: What about area rug color/suggestions?****

I think even with that bit of green the blue might still look nice. :)

There is no carpet, it's an all wooden-floor house, but we'll get an area rug for the living room. I really really want to introduce some color into the living room in some way or another...

well if its a wood floor then chocolate wouldn't match.. hmm. i'd say red then but i think red is a little overdone nowadays... but green is the contrasting color to red.. lol wow i learned something in art school

None of it looks quite right to me. I tried a bunch of paint colors on those Sherwin-Williams type programs they have online...Part of it is that the furniture isn't in the house yet....so it will look much different when we get it in there. It's a very old house so bright colors probably won't do too well....Maybe I'll have to just introduce colors in the curtains....:thinking

:yes My mom made her walls an eggshell color in the whole house and added color with other things. For the bathroom she made the colors purple & green but none of the major things were colored. She just made the towels and other small things those colors. She added fake plants and candles to the room to give it the color. :)

That's a good idea, I've heard that's the best thing to do.

This rug would be absolutely perfect in that house and with the colors of our things and everything...it's a very woodsy-old house surrounded by meadows and forest, so I think the more rustic look suits it...

I could use the lighter or an eggshellish color from the rug for the walls and then do the curtains and pillows and accents in the blues and tans from the rug.....

I know that I have seen area rugs that are like the black and green colors with a bit of blue in it if you really wanna pull some blue in there. But if not, maybe like a light olive green color?

I agree. I would stay away from red, you don't want a Christmas living room since the couches have a green tone to them. Stay away from a bright orange because of your black leather (Halloween). I'm so not good with tho, I'm kinda having the same problem in my house.

Very Nice Rug.... Target has some too I've seen with several earthy colors in one rug that would work great! I always choose my textiles first, and then select paint colors from there. But I'm super picky :lol

have you thought about using the color for the walls and then faux-ing it or textorizing it so that it dulls the color out yet still gives you color in the room? for example take the blue that you like and after it is dry going over it with white or off white but before it is completely dry wipe at it with a newspaper or sponge the white over it as apposed to painting or rolling it on lol my brother used to own a painting business he has lots of ideas like painting the walls egg shell or victorian white and taping small sections and painting a few thin lines every few inches ( like pencil thin) of alternating green and blue colors ( i thought it would be ugly then i saw it in one of the dining rooms he did with red and black lines and it was amazing ) just throwing some ideas at you hope you do not mind

Thanks! We bought them from a small-town furniture dealer in a town about 45 miles from where we live, but they are Ashley brand, so I know the Ashley store sells them too. They're 2 years old so not sure if they still make them, but they are SO COMPHY!

I've seen some nice yellow (more of a neutral yellow, if there is such a thing, not bright and cheery yellow) walls here lately and have really liked them. There is that goldish yellow tone that I saw in the throw pillows, and I think the yellow would be a nice accent to them, even with a rug with neutral tones.

That's a good idea to incorporate a somewhat hint of goldish tone. I think I'm going to go with an ivory with a hint of gold - very light, so I can bring in color with the rug (the one I posted), curtains, throw pillows, etc.

I was looking at Behr.com and found a yellow color called straw hat that
I liked a lot. It showed accent colors too, mostly of off-white and beige. Then there were also browns, greens, and even a blue included as possible accents. Maybe you could do the window treatments in brown or blue....

I wish I could put a picture of where I saw the yellow wall at, just don't remember where it was!

i say, find a rug first, then use it to pick your wall color. also take into consideration the size of the room & how much natural light there is. you don't want the color too dark if the room is small & there's not much light. in that case, a darker accent wall would be cool.

OMG it's Andrea!

Dutch boy has a color called dried sage or sage. I used that in our old house and it went good with our couch ( same color) and all of the wood in our living room. Good luck.

You could always try getting two colors and doing a sponge paint type thing. My sister did that in her room and it came out really nice.

Sorry I can't go to sleep so I did this lol.

Well this is a really old pic (DD was in a Bumbo, lol, she's almost 2 now!) but we have almost identical colored furniture as you (from what I can tell, ours is a greyish, greenish, khaki-ish, very neutral, very durable, very COMFY!) and we painted our walls a color from Behr (home depot) called bleached denim. We also have black walnut wood furniture as you can see. I LOVE our wall color and we've gotten lots of complements on it. I don't have those red pillows anymore, we got some with the same blue and grayish furniture color in them. All my pictures on my walls have black walnut or silver frames.

Oh and in my old place, I had the same furniture and a color on the walls called butter cookie which was a light creamy yellow. It also looked really good!

That's exactly our style! "Contemporary comfort" :)

I spoke to the parents (they technically have all the legal say over the property/house) about the rug I found and they both love it as well. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that it reminds me of my Granny and Gramps when they lived there....and yet, it's still something that DH and I love too. That way it could be something to tie everything together...their old home, our new things, both styles, you know. So I really think we're going to go ahead and get that rug and take it from there.

I think we're going to do the walls a gold-tintish ivory color and then add color with the curtains, rug, and throw pillows, etc. I think it will look best with the golden wood trim they have and the wood floors. Also easier to go with other things if we for some reason have to get new furniture at some point while we are there. There really isn't much wall space in the living room - one wall has a fireplace surrounded by limestone, another wall has a HUGE bay window overlooking the forest and trees, and another wall is 1/2 a wall because it is (strange I know) separating the entryway from the rest of the room. So really there's only one main wall for paint color to show...but there's lots of places for curtains! :D

A lot of times a light cream or nuetral color on the walls is the way to go, with bringing the color in through accents such as curtains or pillows or rugs. I hope you find the right color! Good luck!

Good choice on the rug, I was going to suggest a patterned rug. I think your idea for the walls is the best solution!
