PM me anytime if you want to chat vron 01-21-2008, 03:44 PM my husband just left for Ft. Drum, now NC, then off to Afghanistan in March, with the 69th out of NYC. I know there were thousands who left with him. where in NY is he based, and where is he going? Rockellexo 01-21-2008, 05:51 PM We're both from buffalo. He just left from here to NC.. also going to afghanistan in March. Glad to know someone else is on here! are you going down to bragg before they leave? vron 01-22-2008, 07:28 AM i wish, i am in london getting my masters, and our final is on the day they leave and the school won't let me miss it. i feel terrible!!! his family will be there though, thank God. Are you going down to NC? Dani17 01-22-2008, 02:09 PM My db went down to fort bragg in october and just deployed for afghanistan in december. He is also in the NG for NY. You're not alone, but there aren't many of us :P I wasn't able to go down to NC for the deployment sadly. He was in the first wave of National Guardsmen going Afghanistan from NY. We can have a little NY club :cp Keep in touch :) vron 01-23-2008, 09:27 AM i didn't know they left in "waves" . . . . so i guess the guys that just left were the 2nd. that must have been hard not being there to say good bye for a year, i know it is gonna kill me. have you heard from him since he got there? -v momgonemad 01-23-2008, 08:58 PM are you able to communicate with him there? how does it all work? my husband leaves for afghanistan in march, dont know what to expect Rockellexo 01-23-2008, 10:36 PM are you able to communicate with him there? how does it all work? my husband leaves for afghanistan in march, dont know what to expect He thought they couldnt bring cell phones so he shut his service off..turns out they can...He called last night but the phone kept cutting out then he said he had to go and hung up :( i've already written three letters. how long is yours going to be in Afghanistan for?? Mine keeps me in the dark about that stuff Dani17 01-24-2008, 12:03 AM Well he left about a month ago. He shut his cell phone off after training. He got an international cell phone. He has only been able to call me once since there, he's called his parents a few times. We have been able to communicate through aim several times. He brought his laptop. I would say the communication depends on where they end up being stationed. The international cell phone is a great thing too, just expensive. DB's is 50 cents a minute. At first it can be harder for them to communicate because they may not get to their base right away. That's what happened with DB. If any of you ladies want any more info please feel free to PM me, I'm on here a lot. :hugs momgonemad 01-25-2008, 06:19 PM hi dani, so communication is sporatic huh? my husband has his laptop with him and we are both members of skype. i was really hoping we would be able to communicate via the web cam. my kids are really hoping to see their dad as well. they are too young to send or read e-mail. i figured we may go through periods of time w/o communication. im freaking out about that. i hate things i cant control. i wish were all over and it has barely begun Dani17 01-27-2008, 02:58 PM hi dani, so communication is sporatic huh? my husband has his laptop with him and we are both members of skype. i was really hoping we would be able to communicate via the web cam. my kids are really hoping to see their dad as well. they are too young to send or read e-mail. i figured we may go through periods of time w/o communication. im freaking out about that. i hate things i cant control. i wish were all over and it has barely begun It may be different for him because he's been moved around a good amount. At the moment I just found out he will be on a base without much internet access. I would say most of the bases will have internet capabilities ESP if he brought a laptop. That's a really good thing I think. I've been living under the rule of no news is good news as tough as that's been. It's a tough adjustment, but having him away for training for so long first actually served as a great adjustment for me. I got used to not hearing from him so much and knowing he wasn't in harms way. So now that he is in harm's way I can at least not totally freak out when I don't hear from him... I hope you have good luck with it all. I've been reading books about going through deployments lately. I recommend them highly, they've helped me a lot. Keep in tough :hugs cammi93 01-28-2008, 07:47 AM Hi! My DH is in the Army reserves, his unit deployed from Ft. Hamilton, NY in Brooklyn. I know what you mean..it seems like the SOs in NYC are so far away from one another. I'm glad you guys are also in the NY area. DH is currently in training in indiana, then is being sent to Kuwait at the end of Feb or early March. Someone mentioned reading books about going through deployments, what are the names of the books? I'm interested in reading some as well. vron 02-02-2008, 08:37 AM i didn't mention the books, but i am in the middle of writing a play for my MA dissertation that explores the lives of the families of members of the military. Ha, i have lists of books. the one i am basing alot on is called a year of absence by jessica redmond. it follows the stories of six different women and how they dealth with deployment. There is also "Portraits of the Toughest Job in the Army: Voices and Faces of Modern Army Wives", or "The Battle At Home When Your Soldier's At War" by Judith Bray. Then there is always the chicken soup books. i also read book called "following the drum: the lives of army wives and daughters" that follows the history of how bad conditions used to be for wives and children from 1660 to the present. There's a play by david hare called stuff happens that is based on political interviews and such that deals with that aspect of the war too. hope ya find some of those useful, enjoy |
