View Full Version : Dog vs. Cat
Volley1985 01-25-2008, 10:01 PM So I think I have decided to get a pet to keep me company but not sure if I should get a dog or a cat. If I get a dog it will be a small one like a Yorkie or Pomeranian... but I've never taken care of a dog before. We've had cats so I would be used to that but what are your opinions? I also will be working 4 days a week from noon to 11 but have an hour lunch break in the middle. I didn't know how much attention small dogs like that would need... Any recommendations??? :puzz
Victoria 01-26-2008, 12:39 PM Since you'd be working fairly often, I personally, wouldn't get a puppy. I like rat terriers, yorkies, and chihuahuas. We had a PomChi, but he was too hyper!!! I'd also get a female vice a male...just my preferences. :)
Wicked 01-26-2008, 12:39 PM Dogs require a LOT more attention and training.
DakotaCowgirl 01-26-2008, 01:28 PM We went with cats because I worked so much and didn't have time to work with a dog that is needed. I love them but my DH doesn't.
Cat are easier in my opinion.
CKSimmons 01-26-2008, 01:31 PM yeah i just got a puppy, a lil minature dotson. I love her so much, but puppys do require a lot of attention. I like both cats and dogs. I love pets. Would u be the only person taking care of the pet...or is there someone else there who could help?
Gunslinger's Gal 01-26-2008, 01:38 PM Do you want a companion or just something else breathing in your house?
Dogs want to be near you when you are home. Cats - not so much. LOL!!
Yes, cats are easier, but they are much more independant and don't necesarily feel the need to snuggle with you just because you said so.
If you decide to go with a dog, I would get a slightly older rescue. With your work schedule, housebreaking is going to be difficult as will training. With an older rescue, you don't have all of that puppy energy to channel, you don't have to housebreak and long hours spent alone while you work won't be such an issue. And you will be saving a life.

Someone should tell my cats that. :lol They are all over us all the time. :giggle

Our current cat will let you pet her for a couple of minutes. Then she bites your hand and gives you a swat. :eek
CKSimmons 01-26-2008, 01:47 PM well my cat acts independent sometimes...and other times he is all over us for affection. I think it varies from cat to cat.
princessgwynn 01-26-2008, 01:50 PM I am personally a cat person- I have two fighting over my lap right now in fact :lol- but dogs are fun also. I agree with the other girls though- if you are going to be working that much and want a dog get an older rescue. My parents have two and they are the sweetest dogs ever.
MontanaSweetie 01-26-2008, 03:02 PM Dogs require a LOT more attention and training.
I am not a cat person in general (I'm allergic to them), but this is so true!
Cats are independent in nature, which is helpful if you are not going to be home alot of the time. I would recommend adopting an adult cat from a shelter or rescue, that way you don't have to go through the whole kitten phase since you have to work and such.

Totally agree. My cats love being lap cats and loved on. Almost to the point of being obnoxious.
:D
Amber_Star87 01-28-2008, 01:41 PM :tu If you really would like a pet I agree w/ getting a slightly older one from a rescue. There's no house or litter box training, plus your saving an animal that needs a loving home!!
Kristen 01-28-2008, 01:50 PM In my experience, small breeds are a lot harder to housebreak, and harder to train. So I would go for an older dog over a puppy.
I've never had much luck with cats, so I can't say much about them.
