JustBreathe 01-27-2008, 12:23 AM My mom had twin boys as her first children. The doctors didn't know she was carrying twins, and my brother was the only one that was delivered alive. What are my chances of 1) having twins and 2) miscarrying....?
Also, I have PCOS, so I know that can play into the whole miscarriage issue.
Donna 01-27-2008, 12:46 AM I had 5 miscarriages then had 4 live children. My mom and neither of my grandmothers ever miscarried that they know of.

no problem... i forgot about the twins part. No twins anywhere on either side of our families, but 3 of my preg's have been with twins. LOL
2123wife 01-27-2008, 02:10 PM With them giving ultrasounds now its unlikey that you would be pregnant with twins and not know it, BUT anything is possible.
Mrs. Wachtman 01-27-2008, 03:42 PM I think it all depends on your family. Here's a little history of mine : My greatgrand mother (this is all going to be about my mothers side) with her pregnancy got pregnant with twins and miscarried and then her daughter my Grandma her first pregnancy got pregnant with twins and miscarried then her daughter my Mother her first pregnancy got pregnant with twins and miscarried and then me my moms daughter my first pregnancy got pregnant and miscarred with twins! So I honestly think it all depends on your family and your genes and how well they are carried down. With my second pregnany it was amazing had no signs of miscarriage nothing, up until it was time to come out, they have to induce me twice to get my son out! Now with this prengnancy I'm 26 weeks don't know if its twins yet, due to a screw up with A the ultra sound machine and then now B waiting until we get to Alaska to get our Medical going again. So I think overall it just really depends, but who know's maybe my family is just special!
Cangel14 01-27-2008, 05:27 PM My mom miscarried just months before she conceived me, she also had a really tough time getting pregnant for years. I have never miscarried - knock on wood. I don't think your mother's miscarriages put you at risk of miscarrying... As for twins, I hear that it's usually from the dad's side. My grandfather was a twin, and all my cousins are girls and none of them have had twins... however my brother is the only male on that side of the family and doesn't have kids yet, but when he does it'll be interesting to see if he has twins, lol.
thejibstah 01-27-2008, 07:45 PM Isn't it impossible for a father's side to have any effect on producing twins? It is the woman who has to release two eggs...
I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong.
coloradokitkat 01-27-2008, 08:08 PM two eggs would be FRATERNAL twins and yes that has everything to do with the woman's side of the family genes, her fertility, age, health, and what not.
Identical twins, however can be influenced by the father's sperm because it is ONE egg that has to split into two fetuses, becoming identical copies of each other. I dont think identical twins are hereditary though. It's not so much a hereditary trait of a fertilized egg splitting into two, but an anomaly that occurs. Randomly and for whatever reason the egg split, but not because the sperm or the egg were genetically 'proned' to do so.

It is totally possible for the father to have an impact. If there are 2 eggs fertilised then you get non identical (which is what happened to my mom when she had my brothers), but if the father impacts, then one egg is fertilized with 2 eggs and you get identical twins.
My mom produced 2 eggs when she ovulated (which is rare), and I have been told that it is quite possible that I do the same, but havwe never been tested.
With my first pregnancy I misscarried 1 baby but still had one healthy baby. I didn't find out about the other baby until just before I delivered DS and looked back on the old ultrasounds and talked to my doc.
It is very possible that I will have twins though cause of my history as well as on DH's side. His grandma was a twin and his cousin has twin daughters.
JustBreathe 01-28-2008, 02:28 AM Wow. I had no idea how high the miscarriage rate it! That is awful :(
settles 01-28-2008, 02:31 AM i know nothing about being pregger, obviously i have never been thru it like this woman... but here is what i have heard in the past, im not sure if its true or not?!
i have heard twins come from the mothers side of the family and it usually skips generations. so if your mom's mother is a twin you have a good change of having twins.
i have NOOOO clue if this is true?! just something i was told several times
