Would a pure bred black lab have a white mark on it's chest? Is it one of those things that they can have or is it a sign of them being a mix? Not that it really matters I'm just curious :lol

My next door neighbors chocolate lab has a white mark on it's chest as well but they don't know if she is a mutt or not. I wish I knew what Miley was for sure :lol

We had a pure bred Black Lab with a white chest. I think it comes from the Golden in them. Maybe?

ooh ok.. so I guess it's possible she is pure then. They *think* she is.. but they don't know for sure.

A white mark on the top of the heads of cattle dogs helps indicate that they are pure bred. Both of mine have it.

I'll have to look it up for Labs. I want to say that I have often times seen that white mark on labs though. :yes

I think it is definitely possible.

From AKC

Color
The Labrador Retriever coat colors are black, yellow and chocolate. Any other color or a combination of colors is a disqualification. A small white spot on the chest is permissible, but not desirable.

According to my DH they dont have spots if they are pure bred. He is judging that from the guide dogs he saw and the ones they had growing up.

My black lab is registered with AKC and does not have any white marks on her. I have seen ones who are 'pure bred' that do have a small white spot.

So i guess it's something not completely unheard of.

Sounds like there is a good chance she's pure bred! :D

It's not unheard of but yours doesn't look like a purebred to me. I'm not 100% sure what it's mixed with but I think it definitely has something else in it, even if one of it's parents were just half lab and half something else. The thing about labs (Well that I've noticed) is that a lot of mixed labs take on WAY more of a lab look than the other breed, so most mixed breeds aren't all that different looking than a purebred. The heads and body build is what is usually a give away, at least for me, and yours seems to have a different shaped head and body than purebred but maybe just one of it's parents were mixed or something, so the amount of other breed may be very minimal. She looks like she'll look mostly like lab though, IMO.

But also the American lab looks different then the English lab ;)

A white mark is not unheard of. :shrug Lab is such a dominant breed that almost any dog with lab in it will look more like the lab then the other breed.

Isn't there a blood test for breed typing a dog.

I used to breed Choc labs, and it isn't completely unheard of, just unlikely. I never saw a white mark on any of my labs, but I have seen it on a few at different breeders :yes It IS possible. She wouldn't be "show" material, but she could be full blooded.

Sarah,

Here's a picture of Pure Bred Black Lab, from a breeder called CandyHeart Retrievers. If you notice, he has a small white mark on his chest.

they can have it, it's just not liked for showing. like, gwen isn't really show quality (not that it matters) because of her white chest and toes. it makes her "undesireable" lol

My marley is pure bred and she has no white on her anywhere. I think your puppy looks mixed with something. Her muzzle looks like a diffrent breed.I would sya she's a lab mix (mixed with what I have no clue)

My friend breeds and shows labs. If she had one with a spot she would not breed it. Its most definately looked down on from her POV.
