ok so I have a question. I JUST started birthcontrol two weeks ago. But i started it the same week I was taking an antibiotic (SP?) I know that the antibiotic can reduce the affectivness of the BC. DH and I :sex the next week and I told him that it worked that way. but he still came inside of me... :banghead My period started today but i know I could still be prego. Is it bad for me still take the BC? If I do and I test positive next month what is the chance of birth defects on the baby?

If you think you might be preggo stop taking it, you can always start taking it again if the test comes back negative. in the mean time use other safe sex methods.

I second this, better safe than sorry.

I agree..stop taking it and test just in case. It takes one month for bc to come into effect because your hormones have to get in that "rhythm". So for the first month on bc I would use protection as precaution. Antibiotics make bc basically worthless so I would start your month over from when you take the anitbiotics..kwim? My nursing school teacher got preggo cause she took anitbiotics while on bc :teehee
Also...whenever you take antibiotics it is very important to take probiotics with it so you can replace the good bactieria you just killed off with the antibiotics!

I'm not sure about any risks of birth defect or anything, but I just wanted to say that the first 3 weeks you are on BC it isn't in your system enough to be working yet, so even if you hadn't been on antibiotics you need to use a backup method of BC for that first month anyways.

call your dr & see what they advise.
for future, have condoms on hand & insist your db wears one if the effectiveness of your bc is in question.

taking it for another month will not hurt the baby. I have aske my doctor and he said keep taking it and even sought a second opinion right there.

I was on bcp when I got pregnant with Miss K and didn't know until I was about 5 weeks pregnant or so. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Test when your next period would be due or make an appointment with your PCM

haha thanks girl. I'm not worried about getting prego. DH and I would really love it but we are trying to hold off until our honeymoon. So if we did it would be a wonderful present in both of our eyes. So thats the only reason a secondary BC was not or ever will be used. But thank you for letting me know. I was just more worried about causing birth defects.
