If you're married, REGARDLESS if you worked, you should be filing MFJ! Yes you can still claim those education expenses!

you can't claim head of household if you're married.... if you get a 1098T you can claim certain expenses and get a lifetime learning, hope, or (can't think of the name) credit. he can't claim you as a dependent in terms of taxes... just in terms of the military.

Yes, filing as head of household gives you extra money. And yes, your DH should claim you as a dependent (he has to have at least one dependent in order to file as head of household). He gets extra money for claiming you as a dependent as well. And yes, college expenses are tax deductable.

You might pick up Turbotax and use it to do your taxes if you aren't having a professional do them. It's so easy to use, and it answers all of those questions and more.

You can claim head of household if you have children. At least that's what my accountant told me. I'm not married, so I never asked about the married part, but I know that if you have at least one dependent, you can file as head of household.

so basically, if he were to claim you as a dep, you wouldn't get any kind of extra $$ for school because you wouldn't be filing a return of your own... so it's a wash.

Yes...but a SPOUSE is NOT a child/dependent for IRS purposes...

I don't recall EVER saying that a SPOUSE was considered a child. EXCUSE THE HELL OUT OF ME FOR ANSWERING HER QUESTION ABOUT HOH. I admit that I didn't know that you couldn't file HOH if you were married, but for God's sake...I just tried to explain that. I'll just stop trying to help out anyone if this is the crap I'll get. At least Bex was nice about it.

it's all good, guys... we're just trying to answer kris' question so she and her hubby don't get audited.

in the mil, your spouse = "dependent"
to the IRS your spouse = "your spouse," your kids = "your dependents"
when you're single and provide a certain % of care for the members of your household (non married) you can claim head of household. (if you have kids)

I'm in no way being bitchy about it! NOW IF IT TYPED MY WHOLE SENTENCE LIKE THIS, then I can see why your thong got all wrapped up. When people capitalize certain words, they're putting emphasis on it...

Sorry you got offended. I'll excuse you just this once! ;):P

Actually, I'm not wearing a thong...today anyway.

LOL! I'm sorry. I've had a hellish day at work, and I can't seem to even concentrate on this new medication the doc gave me. I was being bitchy, and I do appologize!!!

Thanks so much for all of the help! Someone told DH that if he filed HOH he would get a grand but that did not sound right to me or look like anything I saw when I messed with the computer online

The Child Tax Credit is worth up to $1000, so I'm not sure what info your DH received since you don't have any kidlets. :dunno.

You need to file joint. also you can claim your schooling. If you had children, you can get the child credit.

Good luck!
