ANGLETON, Texas -- The mother of a baby who was allegedly killed by his father willingly allowed him to take their son after he warned her he might harm a child, according to court documents on Friday.
Galveston police said Caren Kohberger's 3-month-old son, Alijah, was found dead along Seawall Boulevard on Jan. 29. Alijah's father, Travis "T.J." Mullis has confessed to the killing, police said.
Kohberger initially cooperated with the police investigation. She later decided she did not want to talk to police without an attorney and resumed cooperating after she hired a lawyer.The Brazoria County District Attorney's Office charged Kohberger Thursday with endangering a child.One of Kohberger's friends, who requested that he not be identified, said the district attorney has made a mistake."I feel like they're pulling for something, they're trying to make a case that might not even really be there," the friend said. "I really don't think it's on Caren so much as it would on T.J."The district attorney said Kohberger should not have handed Alijah over to Mullis because she knew that he was unstable and could hurt Alijah.According the arrest affidavit, Kohberger told police that Mullis was up all night on Jan. 29 and began having flashbacks of being sexually abused as a child. She also told police that Mullis said he needed to get out of the house because he thought he might do something to one of the children.Kohberger allowed Mullis to take Alijah after he said he might hurt a child. Investigators said that Kohberger knowingly and willingly placed her child in imminent danger.Friends said she had no reason to believe Mullis would harm their baby."She did it for security purposes," said Michele, Kohberger's roommate who declined to give her last name. "He did have a tendency of taking off and not returning for a few days, so that (allowing him to take Alijah) was her security of him returning."The affidavit also stated that Kohberger told police that Mullis told her he sexually abused a child while he was a juvenile.Friends said they believe Kohberger is in New York.Investigators said Mullis confessed to stomping Alijah to death because the baby would not stop crying.I can't even put into words how I feel about this. that poor child.
