this is probably a stupid question, but is BAH taxed? federal, state, something?

i'm in the middle of trying to convince dh to let us move to housing, and his big argument for staying here is that we spend less on rent than we get for BAH, so we're getting some extra money. but when i added up rent, utilities, electric, and gas for his commute, we're only saving 100-200 bucks. which to me isn't worth it - if we're stuck here for the next few years i don't like feeling like i'm cut off from everybody else.

at any rate, i don't know anything about the way his pay stuff works, obviously... but hopefully i can convince him it'll be worth it to move! :)

wow i wanna live where you do!! Our BH pays for our rent and electric and water but BARELY. We have 5$ left over lol. And we live in one of the cheapest places in the area. Any cheaper and we'd be in the ghetto!

The difference is allowances versus pays. Flight pay, sea pay, etc. are all incentive pays and just like your basic pay, they are subject to taxes. However allowances, BAH, BAS, COLA, etc. are all non-taxed.

Got to love that! BAH here is now paying my mortgage. This is the first time ever that it has, and it took us owning the house for 6 years and DH making Chief! House prices here are about $100k more than we paid now, but BAH is now only just covering my mortgage at the 6 year old house prices? Hmmmm... still, I'm not going to complain, all I've got to deal with is utilities now!

I cant complain...it pays all our rent, utilities and food.:cp
But we still have no orders DH is still in AIT, so we are saying over 600 a month JIC.

Is it better in YHO(your honest opinion), to live on or off base?

thanks ladies :) i'm still trying to decide. this might also be a stupid question, but can you get on the waiting list for a particular neighborhood? because there's some nice new rennovated housing here that i'd LOVE to live in, and that would make it worth losing the extra 150-200 bucks.

i've never lived on base before, so i suppose i'm not a good person to answer this, but i personally would prefer on base. just because we aren't saving that much off base, i feel kind of cut off from everybody else, and i'd be a lot closer the the px/commy and cheaper gas. plus we qualify for a 3 bedroom, whereas off base we can only afford to rent a 2 bedroom apartment. we'd get more space and a garage and a yard. :shrug but since i haven't lived on post, i don't know what the downside is.

it is hugely a personal choice-- we have only lived in housing 1 time- and will not do it again.

I did not like living so close to people DH works with- I did not like the gossip, I did not like all the rules.
AND I did not like the fact that we lived in 1100 SQ 2 bedroom and "paid" 1700 dollars a month to live there- and there were just 3 of us- AND the E4 across the street with a wife and 2 kids "paid" 1100 for the SAME exact unit.

So for me-- I will always rent or Buy if I can.
