SEATTLE - A distasteful comment about Chelsea Clinton by an MSNBC anchor could imperil Hillary Rodham Clinton's participation in future presidential debates on the network, a Clinton spokesman said.

In a conference call with reporters, Clinton communications director Howard Wolfson on Friday excoriated MSNBC's David Shuster for suggesting the Clinton campaign had "pimped out" 27-year old Chelsea by having her place phone calls to celebrities and Democratic Party "superdelegates" on her mother's behalf.

Wolfson called Shuster's comment "beneath contempt" and disgusting.

"I, at this point, can't envision a scenario where we would continue to engage in debates on that network," he added.

MSNBC said Shuster, who apologized on the air for his comment, has been temporarily suspended from appearing on all NBC news broadcasts except to offer his apology.

"NBC News takes these matters seriously, and offers our sincere regrets to the Clintons for the remarks," MSNBC spokesman Jeremy Gaines said, adding the network was hopeful the debate would take place as planned.

Clinton and Obama are scheduled to participate in an MSNBC debate Feb. 26 from Ohio, which holds its primary March 4. The Clinton campaign has pushed hard for as many debates as possible with Obama, but Wolfson said the Feb. 26 debate could be jeopardized.

Wolfson pointed to what he called a pattern of tasteless comments by MSNBC anchors about the Clinton campaign. Weeks ago, "Hardball" host Chris Matthews apologized to the former first lady after suggesting her political career had been made possible by her husband's philandering.

Shuster told The Associated Press he has tried to reach Clinton to apologize.

Bill Burton, a spokesman for Obama, called Shuster's comments "deplorable" and said they had no place in the political process.

Superdelegates are elected officials and other members of the Democratic National Committee who serve as upledged delegates to the party's convention. They're expected to play an important role in selecting the party's nominee if the delegate contest between Clinton and Barack Obama remains close.

I agree with David Schuster. I saw him apologise this morning and I feel badly that he is suspended. I really like him.

I watch Morning Joe EVERY morning and it won't be so much fun w.o his commentary tomorrow

I think she might be going a little bit overboard, but whatever she wants to do if she felt her daughter was offended then by all means, I know I would protect my daughter to the best of my ability especially if she was hurt by the comment.

Is she just mad because of the phrase "pimped out"? I guess I don't see what the big deal is, BUT it is a phrase used pretty loosely by people my age--I guess I can see why someone of an older generate might take it to have a different and more offensive meaning.

She is probably just sensitive after all the stuff about Bill and now that. It was probably just like the straw that broke the camels back. I have always felt bad for Chelsea. She was so awkward when her dad was president and she was relentlessly made fun of then.

It just seems like I always hear more about Bill than I do about McCains wife (whats-her-name) and Obama's wife ... and I don't even know if either of them have children or not...

My 11 year old has said that. I am sure she has no clue of the meaning but people these days use it. Leave it to a Clinton.:no

Well of course. Bill was the president for 8 years. McCain's wife was not either was Obama's. So naturally you are going to hear more about Bill. He was a household name to begin with....

I agree.
Just as an add, McCain has something like 5 kids I believe. One of his son's is in the Naval Academy and one of his son's is a Marine Cpl serving in Iraq. I think they have 1 or 2 adopted kids as well.
I know Obama and his wife have two kids, but they are very young and stay at home. Somewhere between 7 and 11, I think.

Updated:John McCain has 7 Children: Doug, Sidney, Andy, Meghan, Jack, Jimmy, Bridget.
3 are from his first marriage - 2 of those are adopted from his 1st wifes 1st marriage. Bridget was adopted from Bangladesh when his wife Cindy found her in Mother Teresa's orphanage. She had a severe cleft palate and they adopted her and had is corrected. Jack is at the Naval Academy, Jimmy in the Marines.

Just thought it was interesting...

Yep, the press has said some very cruel things about her in the past. The candidates children should not be fair game for comments. No matter if they are grown, young children, or in the awkward phase of teenage years.

Yeah, I think she is probably overreacting a little bit, but...

I wonder, when did it become appropriate for our NEWS to be given to us with phrases like "pimped out"? The overall tone and language of the news is RIDICULOUS. I notice it all the time. "Pinhead" here and "whiner" there and all kinds of name calling and unprofessional behavior. The media makes me want to :puke

Let's not forget when Rush said Chelsea was the "new dog in the White House" when Bill was elected:no. That was way wrong and the recent comment was wrong too. I would feel that way whoever it would have been said about. It's just tactless.
