racist? inappropriate? rude? a ~bold statement~?
discuss.
missjenn00 02-11-2008, 03:22 PM not enjoying our outfit..im not sure what she is trying to say.
sdshorty 02-11-2008, 03:22 PM First she looks horrible, not even like a high class hooker. Second, the Nigger remark totally inapporpriate.
*Samantha* 02-11-2008, 03:23 PM yeah I don't like it at all
Larissa 02-11-2008, 03:24 PM I agree, the outfit is horrible. And I absolutely hate the use of the N word,no matter what race the person is.I don't think it was at all appropriate.
sweetheartjess 02-11-2008, 03:24 PM lol. i know the outfit isn't exactly cute but i was going more towards the racial slur on the back of her jacket.
i'm all for fun and games AT HOME, but in public? not so much. she should lose Nas and get with Kanye if she wants to be that ~controversial~ and annoying.
Brandi 02-11-2008, 03:24 PM Yuck, the whole thing is just yuck :lol
Caimbrie 02-11-2008, 03:25 PM She looks like a grubby hooker... but if she wants to lebel herself as a nigger... whatever floats her boat. No different than someone wearing a jacket that says "redneck" or "trailer trash". It's all pretty stupid but if it's what they want to do.. whatever.

I totally agree, I can't belive NAS is married to her. I just picture him with a much classier girl, I really like NAS.
Kristen 02-11-2008, 03:26 PM Inappropriate for sure, along with many other things. Ignorant, and tacky come to mind.
Berkley 02-11-2008, 03:27 PM She looks like a grubby hooker... but if she wants to lebel herself as a nigger... whatever floats her boat. No different than someone wearing a jacket that says "redneck" or "trailer trash". It's all pretty stupid but if it's what they want to do.. whatever.

i can. her milkshake brings all the boys to the yard, duh. :lol
but yeah, seriously.
Kristen 02-11-2008, 03:28 PM i can. her milkshake brings all the boys to the yard, duh. :lol
but yeah, seriously.
:lmao
Rainbow Brite 02-11-2008, 03:31 PM Wow, my 1st thought was "that is the ugliest outfit I've seen in a long, long time" my second though was... WTF.
I'm sorry, but that is not a word to be thrown around by ANYONE. Period.
mrskmw 02-11-2008, 03:32 PM I think she's tacky and looks trashy as hell and find it funny (not literally) that she would wear a jacket with that word on the back (I wont even say it lol). Just a honest question...what would have happened if a white person had shown up with that jacket on?
Jennygirl 02-11-2008, 03:32 PM I agree with sarah...Its no different then foxworthy or that larry guy calling themselves rednecks...if she wants to put herself in the position to be known as that, then good for her.
LaneyBug 02-11-2008, 03:33 PM I think she's tacky and looks trashy as hell and find it funny (not literally) that she would wear a jacket with that word on the back (I wont even say it lol). Just a honest question...what would have happened if a white person had shown up with that jacket on?
My thoughts too. I just feel like it is in the poorest taste.
misty*nicole 02-11-2008, 03:34 PM :no Definitely inappropriate. Those pants are horrible, too.
Fidzy 02-11-2008, 03:35 PM Nas, Kelis' husband, has an album coming out this month called N*****.
Kristen 02-11-2008, 03:35 PM I think there is so much more wrapped up in that word compared to 'redneck' or 'trailer trash'. None of them are nice to say the least, but the N word is taking it to a completely different level IMO, and not cool.
LaneyBug 02-11-2008, 03:37 PM Nas, Kelis' husband, has an album coming out this month called N*****.
Well, maybe he shouldn't...
RunAwayLove 02-11-2008, 03:37 PM Inappropriate for sure, along with many other things. Ignorant, and tacky come to mind.
agreed
Kaiden'sMomma 02-11-2008, 03:38 PM UHM...inappropriate, and a bold statement??? I have no idea. The outfit is horrible in it's own...:no lol
sweetheartjess 02-11-2008, 03:39 PM Just a honest question...what would have happened if a white person had shown up with that jacket on?
Caimbrie stated she feels it the same as a "white person" wearing a Red Neck or Trailer Trash (or w/e) jacket. However, I've got to disagree. The word nigger has SO much negative connotation going back to times when slavery was prevalent; it's a far more derogatory term. There's a fine line when it comes to discussions about this, but *I* have never come across a black person who's "proud to be a nigger." However, I've known many a white-folk who are "proud to be a redneck." So... idk.
To literally call someone that is gross and rude, I don't care who you are.
Kristen 02-11-2008, 03:40 PM Well, maybe he shouldn't...

Fidzy 02-11-2008, 03:41 PM You do realize that she's promoting her husband's album, which was probably chosen as a name just to be controversial? So he could have people talk about, like you all are right now?

I would agree there is so much more behind the word nigger than redneck ect..Hell I call my brother a redneck all the time but would NEVER call someone a nigger.

It would have been HUGE. I dont understand. "We" (non-black people) are "not allowed" to use that word, but some people will throw it around like its nothing at all. It makes me sick.
mrskmw 02-11-2008, 03:43 PM You do realize that she's promoting her husband's album, which was probably chosen as a name just to be controversial? So he could have people talk about, like you all are right now?
Ok? I guess we can talk about it all we want to lol It's great that she is promoting her husbands album but it doesn't change the fact that it's tacky and tasteless.
~Christina~ 02-11-2008, 03:43 PM I think was attempting to make a statement that just went horribly wrong. There has been talk lately about how the meaning of the word has changed and doesn't mean what it used to...etc. etc. I think she was trying to show that with her clothes...but it just ends up being tacky. There is a time and a place for everything and the red carpet at the grammy's just wasn't it.:no

You seriously have never come across a black person who proudly calls themsleves a nigger.. or refers to thier friends as niggers? You hear it ALL THE TIME in rap...
Kristen 02-11-2008, 03:45 PM You do realize that she's promoting her husband's album, which was probably chosen as a name just to be controversial? So he could have people talk about, like you all are right now?
I realized that when I read Elizabeth's thread. They might be successful in getting people, like us, to talk about it. But me talking about surely won't make me buy it. If anything, it makes me less likely to buy it. So, we might be playing into their scheme, but I doubt it will bring the results they want.
Kaiden'sMomma 02-11-2008, 03:45 PM You do realize that she's promoting her husband's album, which was probably chosen as a name just to be controversial? So he could have people talk about, like you all are right now?
I did not realize that.
So, I wonder...once this album comes out. What if it's a hit? Does that mean there will be posters and stickers and shirts that say "Nigger" to promote it? And in that sense...will there be white kids walking around wearing the shirt, and will they get their asses kicked to next year???
Hm. Interesting.
sweetheartjess 02-11-2008, 03:46 PM You do realize that she's promoting her husband's album, which was probably chosen as a name just to be controversial? So he could have people talk about, like you all are right now?
lol i had totally forgotten about the album being called that. oops. i personally don't like his music a bit, so us talking about it on some military SO website isn't going to get him much promotion, i don't think, lol.
Ok? I guess we can talk about it all we want to lol It's great that she is promoting her husbands album but it doesn't change the fact that it's tacky and tasteless.
yeppers.
Jennygirl 02-11-2008, 03:47 PM It would have been HUGE. I dont understand. "We" (non-black people) are "not allowed" to use that word, but some people will throw it around like its nothing at all. It makes me sick.
First, my husband is black and we never ever use that word in this house. So not every (non white people) use that word.
Kristen 02-11-2008, 03:48 PM I don't get it it anyway... it's not a new idea. Didn't Tupac have an album called "N.I.G.G.A.Z. 4 Life" or something like that.
And then there was NWA...
Seems like an old tired tactic to me, which is why I see it as trashy. There's nothing innovative in this marketing scheme at all.
She bought a bedazzler and spelled out a controversial word... I think they need a new PR manager. :dunno
Caimbrie 02-11-2008, 03:49 PM First, my husband is black and we never ever use that word in this house. So not every (non white people) use that word.
She didn't say every black perosn uses the word.
But it's the truth. A lot of black people use the word.
sweetheartjess 02-11-2008, 03:51 PM You seriously have never come across a black person who proudly calls themsleves a nigger.. or refers to thier friends as niggers? You hear it ALL THE TIME in rap...
i've heard it said "nigga".
this is the fine line i was referring to. i am a terrible, horrible person but i say "nigga" every once in a while, but the same way i call someone "fool" or "dude." it's just a pronoun for me.
however, i RARELY have referred to someone as a nigger (i can explain, but i don't care to unless asked). even then, it was NOT in a hurtful, derogatory fashion.
i see the difference and i guess i respect the difference. IMO, it's HUGELY different. i probably won't see eye to eye with lots of people about this, but it's just the way i feel and the way i understand my token black friends to feel as well. :dunno
martiemullet 02-11-2008, 03:53 PM its called "help me, i've fallen in a publicity stunt and i can't get up"

i dunno. i grew up in a trailer park and i get pissed when someone calls me trailer trash. db's done it in fights and its taken a lot more self-restraint than i thought i had in me to not hit him upside the head.
that's a different category of insult thought- classism vs. racism.

I'm sorry but that's a copout to me. whether you say it with poor grammer or properly it's still the same word. Many in the black community have adopted it as an endearing term for their friends and saying it without the "R" is supposed to make it any different? No.. it's just a double standard that too many folks don't want to admit they hold.
Rainbow Brite 02-11-2008, 03:57 PM First, my husband is black and we never ever use that word in this house. So not every (non white people) use that word.
Thats why I said SOME PEOPLE. By no means did I mean to imply that all black people use that word (nor do I think that that was implied by my post).
reynswife 02-11-2008, 03:57 PM TACKY!! That's the first word that came to my mind.
MomWifeMe 02-11-2008, 03:57 PM Nas, Kelis' husband, has an album coming out this month called N*****.
and its a huge disappointment in the black communities. Some even boycotting it. He was laughing saying that he has all kinds of racist remarks towards blacks and whites on the album . I guess he wants to get that shock factor. Thats what happen when your record sells drop you look for ways to get attention.
Jennygirl 02-11-2008, 03:58 PM I'm sorry but that's a copout to me. whether you say it with poor grammer or properly it's still the same word. I agree no matter how you say it or spell it, its the same word.

oh, i absolutely agree it's a double standard, there's no two ways about that. :lol but somehow, it's less offensive than saying it "correctly."
CocoaGoddess 02-11-2008, 03:59 PM What a fun and informative thread! :no
I totally agree, I can't belive NAS is married to her. I just picture him with a much classier girl, I really like NAS.
I guess you'll be disappointed to know that he wore a matching shirt to the Grammy's. And a matching hat. Complete with a matching coat.
Classay!

Well I am black and as a pronoun or anything else no one will call me a nigga or nigger to my face.
Jennygirl 02-11-2008, 04:02 PM Well I am black and as a pronoun or anything else no one will call me a nigga or nigger to my face.
Thats what I dont get, the pronoun thing...I dont think you would go up to people and say it, and then be like its ok, its just a pronoun I use!
sweetheartjess 02-11-2008, 04:02 PM Well I am black and as a pronoun or anything else no one will call me a nigga or nigger to my face.
i don't go around spouting it to every (black) person i meet just bc i have a couple black friends. :lol

Thats the truth. Black, white, asian, or jewish I dont care who say it. You will not refer to me in that fashion. A lot of black people do not see that term as endearing but their are some that do and will attack another race for using the term with a "er" or an "a".

Then in my opinion they were BOTH tacky and tasteless.

Good...because I have family and friends that will call them some fighting words.
Nigga, Nigger, and Colored. Touchy words to some in the black community

i agree;)
wife-n-mommy 02-11-2008, 04:18 PM Oh...wow... that is just wrong... why would you willingly label yourself that way?
MontanaSweetie 02-11-2008, 04:20 PM Completely inappropriate!! :td
footstepswife 02-11-2008, 04:26 PM don't like it.
sdshorty 02-11-2008, 04:46 PM Oh Yea! I forgot NAS next album was called that. I still think its tasteless for her to wear it on her jacket to a Grammy event. I like NAS though, so I'll probably buy his album anyway, lol.
Jenabugg 02-11-2008, 04:48 PM inappropriate by all means, and she looks like a big hooker!
Rainbow Brite 02-11-2008, 04:49 PM Then in my opinion they were BOTH tacky and tasteless.
:agree
*~*Cori*~* 02-11-2008, 05:42 PM First she looks horrible, not even like a high class hooker. Second, the Nigger remark totally inapporpriate.
Completely agree!
There is nothing that could come from that crude inappropriate word in my opinon... God how I despise that word! Being from the Deep South some of my family (not mom and dad or DH but like cousins and uncles etc) say it and I hate that sooo much... it makes me cringe.
The Megster 02-11-2008, 06:01 PM I am prolly the only one to say this, but I actually dig the pants. She could have rocked the house with those, but all the other stuff needs to go. Like others have said, it's tasteless and tacky. IMO, n***** is NEVER appropriate!
sweetheartjess 02-11-2008, 06:09 PM Good...because I have family and friends that will call them some fighting words.
Nigga, Nigger, and Colored. Touchy words to some in the black community

i got into an argument with my EX FIL about that. he SWORE up and down black people prefer to be called colored. i was like OMG ARE YOU SERIOUS? i couldn't win that argument (no use in arguing with a fool), but GOOD GRIEF it got me heated. he just liked to piss me off as much as possible though.
Steph* 02-11-2008, 06:15 PM She's promoting her husband's album, who cares? If you don't like it, don't buy the album. :lol
usnwife1205 02-11-2008, 06:20 PM I totally agree, I can't belive NAS is married to her. I just picture him with a much classier girl, I really like NAS.
I just wanted to add that Nas had on a shirt like that too...
Misssimms07 02-11-2008, 07:57 PM Well I was waiting for this debate to come up....lol... Nas decided to name his album this in order to arouse this debate that we are having now... I don't think he was tryin to expliot the word I think he was tryin to bring to light what it means... While I can appreciate what he is trying to do..b/c racism is still alive... I think that this may not have been the best avenue... yes he will def get press on it.. Ithink that his feelings could have been expressed better on the album instead of with this title....But all I know is they must be in love...cuz there woulda been no way I would be walkin around at the Grammys with that on instead of a fabulous gown....lol
But I really don't think his label will allow this but it will be interesting to see....
Lilbear911 02-11-2008, 08:10 PM Thats great if she wants to promote her hubbys album...and shoot- if she wants to wear that...then fine... It just seems like it would have been more appropriate to wear a nice gown...or something, and safe the promoting (at least w/ that kind of outfit) for a different occasion.
LittleMsSunshine 02-11-2008, 08:10 PM I just think it's trashy. And counterproductive to ending racism.
Green~Mammy 02-11-2008, 08:18 PM It is just a word, words only have power to hurt and offend us when we give them that power. same as with kike it is a word, one that I allow to hurt me when it is used. It's still just a word though like any other.
Someone can call me Jewish and say it with the same meaning as kike. Just like some one can say African American and you know they mean something else completely. It is all in the tone and intent of how the word is spoken. We give words their power with our feelings and histories.
This is a very good book (and a somewhat controversial one as well)
Nigger: The Strange Career of a Troublesome Word (http://www.amazon.com/Nigger-Strange-Career-Troublesome-Word/dp/0375713719/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1202778690&sr=1-1)
I think it is important to know the history of where a word came from and some of the things in that book are very surprising.
froglove 02-11-2008, 08:45 PM You know I dont care if it said I LOVE RAINBOWS that outfit is FUGLY!!!!! :lol
palemoon21 02-11-2008, 08:48 PM I think that she needs to realize she's giving EVERYONE the freedom to refer to her as that "word". I personally find it offensive......and I am white. To me she's basically endorsing the negative stigma that is attatched to that language. oh well, not my problem....it's just my .02
goldilockz 02-11-2008, 08:53 PM No one gets shot for calling someone a redneck. People get shot over the words on her clothing.
ETA: You're walking along in your "Patriots" jacket and someone wants to get your attention, maybe you dropped the book you're carrying or something. "Hey!!! ... Patriots!" and you turn around. Same scenario with her wearing that jacket walking down the street? Yeah. Right.
Green~Mammy 02-11-2008, 09:08 PM Good...because I have family and friends that will call them some fighting words.
Nigga, Nigger, and Colored. Touchy words to some in the black community
I have seen the word coloured used on here it always makes me want to ask something smart ass like "with what crayola" I didn't even know people still used that term.
MrsMixon 02-11-2008, 09:10 PM How about....
she looks trashy and deff not in the good way...and OMG can those pants BE any tighter??? I was so distracted by all the butt there I didnt see the rhinestone Nigger for a while! GAH What is with people TRYING to look like sh*t?
kitkat 02-11-2008, 09:11 PM one way to break a word from it's negative meaning is to adopt it as your own. a word only has power if you allow it to have power over you. that may be one reason why rappers use the word, and maybe that's why nas wants to name his album that. just an interesting idea...
although this may not have been the most stylish way of sparking debate, clearly it has.
MrsMixon 02-11-2008, 09:11 PM You know I dont care if it said I LOVE RAINBOWS that outfit is FUGLY!!!!! :lol

:LOL my DH too!
Berkley 02-12-2008, 08:01 AM I'll just say that I agree with Caimbrie.
I'll also say that I will not and do not use the word N***** I wont. I don't care if some rap guy says oh well it's ok lets change the word. That word will NEVER be changed in my mind. It's a horrible awful word that is used to demean an entire group of people.
I will say and I'm sorry... but why is ok for her to be wearing that? B/c her dh's album is going to be named that? Or is it b/c she's black. If a white person despite NAS ties came wearing that the press and organizations would be involved SO fast. They would be talking about ties to the KKK and etc. It's ridiculous to me.
It's a horrible word that no matter how much you try and pretty it up still makes me think of injustice and hatred and I will NOT stand to see that from me or those around me in my lifetime.
:edit as far as Nas and rap I know nothing. I don't listen to rap really. I am a led zep, doors, kravitz, elton john kind've girl. I like that ballady type rock..kwim So when someone said it was Nas's new album I honestly had no idea. In fact I don't know who Nas is.

MrsSTG 02-12-2008, 08:30 AM That is soo stupid.....I don't like or think that is an acceptable word. On top of it all it makes her look like an ignorant ass.
Theresa 02-12-2008, 08:30 AM :rofl At first at was like Trivets?!? She is SO on the wrong thread..LOL Then I looked at her earrings..LOL
Yeah it was either that, or "my kitchen called, it wants its trivets back." :rofl
Berkley 02-12-2008, 08:36 AM Yeah it was either that, or "my kitchen called, it wants its trivets back." :rofl
OMGosh!!! I do need some new trivets btw. WAY off topic. I would ideally like wooden ones. hmmmmmmmmm
mitziebella 02-12-2008, 08:41 AM Can't believe they let her out looking that way. Not cute at all.
I guess someone really is in need of standing out from the crowd.
Theresa 02-12-2008, 09:41 AM OMGosh!!! I do need some new trivets btw. WAY off topic. I would ideally like wooden ones. hmmmmmmmmm
Still off topic but my favorite trivet ever is the one my Dad made me a few years ago with wine corks. :wub
sweetheartjess 02-12-2008, 09:44 AM what the F is a trivet?
jlbecker 02-12-2008, 09:45 AM I totally agree, I can't belive NAS is married to her. I just picture him with a much classier girl, I really like NAS.
i thought that was the name of his new album & she was trying to promote it. :dunno
ETA: i think the whole thing is pretty dumb, but she got what she wanted. we are talking about it.
mpicky 02-12-2008, 09:52 AM Blacks using that word is almost the same as women using bitch. They are trying to own it, to take it away from those that would use it to hurt. By over using the word, it loses it's meaning. Maybe you don't understand because you have never been there. Instead of heaping massive amounts of judgement on others, maybe try to place yourself in their shoes.
Berkley 02-12-2008, 09:57 AM Still off topic but my favorite trivet ever is the one my Dad made me a few years ago with wine corks. :wub
OH I am SOOOOO jealous!!!!! send me a pic I wanna see!!

:lol Seriously?! I think he's crazy. He wore a lovely matching t-shirt by the way, with the same word on it.
Theresa 02-12-2008, 10:05 AM Jess, a trivet is basically something to rest a hot pot/pan on.
Berk, I'll take a picture and PM you. :D

thank ya :)

I think that's a cop out excuse. Honestly I do.
The only way a group can "own" a word is if everyone is in agreement that the word is worthy of being "owned" From the looks of just this thread alone it does not appear that way to me.
One person cannot decide that such a horrible awful word is ok to be owned on their own volition and then use it however they feel and expect no backlash.
It's IMO that this is a publicity stunt and it's getting them exactly what they want.. Publicity.
I don't think I am heaping massive amounts of judgement, I think I am being RIGHTFULLY Judgemental and that is NOT something I say very often.
cceribit 02-12-2008, 10:50 AM Personally people continually saying "own the word" "own the word" is just promoting the ignorance of it all. You cannot "own" a word. What does that mean exactly? Just b/c YOU own the word does not mean it's any less objectionable to me or her. I had not one clue who this person or this NAS person is/was b/c I refuse to listen to anything that hops, bops, raps, taps or kibitz's. So to me, seeing her... she looked trashy, like she was wearing the grates from a road drain and was sporting a very ill-meaning word across her back.
~Jess~ 02-12-2008, 11:13 AM Eww her outfit is horendous :puke On the top of the word of choice it's an ugly word. I'm offended that they let her walk around with that ugly word on her back.
OneSailorsGirl25 02-12-2008, 11:44 AM It is my opinion that if it is considered racist and offensive for a white person to use the "N" word, then it should also be considered racist and offensive for a black person to use it.
mpicky 02-12-2008, 12:37 PM You can call it a cop out, but then you just show you are not willing to learn. many people on this thread have asked Why, and when faced with an answer, you dismiss it. This is the basis of many studies, how to take the power out of hurtful words is to begin to use them yourself. We all do it to an extent, use words to laugh at our selves. Gays did it with the word queer, women do it with the word bitch. How many women do you know call themselves or others bitches, but low and behold, if a man did it, it would be on. It is no different. The difference is, it is still too early for the sting to be taken out of that word. I didn't just make it up.

I know many people including myself who despise queer I know many homosexuals who despise that word as well. I know MANY women who HATE the word Bitch. So you can try and "own" whatever word you like but ALL you are doing is OWNING it for yourself not for everyone. Which was the point. It's a hateful hurtful word to ALOT of people. I don't ever see that word being an ok word to more then a few. And even if it did become one I would never use it. That word is just awful.
Oh and I'm not saying you are making anything up. I'm not saying YOU are wrong. I'm just simply saying I don't agree :)

I don't agree entirely either. It obviously doesn't work. (and I don't use any of those words) I am just saying try to understand where they are coming from. They are trying.

KatReborn 02-12-2008, 03:24 PM First she looks horrible, not even like a high class hooker. Second, the Nigger remark totally inapporpriate.

:five
Bryanna 02-12-2008, 08:57 PM I think the whole outfit is terrible... as for using the term nigger... i dont find it appropriate... with her own group of friends who all are ok with the word? go wild.. but out and about? its just too hurtful to too many people.
My gay friends and i all use terms that are absolutely NOT to be used around anyone else.... BECAUSE they are HURTFUL... with close friends who understand? its ok.. but ONLY then.. because we GET it.
My best friend and i often call each other bitch and whore... but we are careful about who hears it... its just not appropriate for EVERYONE.
There is a time and a place to make a statement as well. and if you ARE going to make a statement... you should do a good job about it. or you just end up looking ridiculous.. much like this chick.

That is a very astute observation.
And, it's trashy. Just had to get that in there.:D
Rain. 02-13-2008, 10:56 AM I didnt read the entire thread (i snuck on lol) but maybe she is promoting his album? Last I heard his new cd thats suppose to come out this year is titled Nigger
1. her ass looks absurd in those pants
2. that word is wildly inappropriate and Nas should never hate titled his album that
3. her outfit is not as surprising to me as how easily such a hateful word appears to roll off the keyboards of many here
harrisonsdream 02-13-2008, 11:11 AM I agree, the outfit is horrible. And I absolutely hate the use of the N word,no matter what race the person is.I don't think it was at all appropriate.
First she looks horrible, not even like a high class hooker. Second, the Nigger remark totally inapporpriate.
Yuck, the whole thing is just yuck :lol
Inappropriate for sure, along with many other things. Ignorant, and tacky come to mind.
agree
Ellen 02-13-2008, 11:23 AM Hmm.... :thinking I wonder the publics reaction if I were to walk out in public wearing that jacket.... Wouldn't be pretty. :thinking
Hate the outfit and 'whatever' statement she is trying to make.
Chevy_Gurl 02-13-2008, 04:40 PM It's stupid. Once again a black person can use the term but as soon as a white person does they are racist. Im so sick of the black person's mentality of this crap. :rolleyes
