How long did it take your SO to reach specialist?? Dh is a PFC and he said once he reaches specialist he wants to go active. He went from E1 to E3 in less than 3 months...I know that's not normal...but how long does it normally take to go from E3 (PFC) to E4 (specialist)??

I think SPC has something like 1 year from when you signed and some other requirements. I'm sure there's a list of the promotion schedule somewhere. I know a lot of the National Guard guys are SPC before they get out of AIT or while they're in AIT.
Not too specific, sorry

I can see from my DH Awards that he went to Specialist after 2 years .
I also have been informed you advance faster in rank when you are in the AF compared to the Army.
When my DH reached E5 in the Army and medically retired . He was told at the USAF facilities here in England when he applied for a job as a DOD employee that they Class it as E6 in the AF. He was payed accordingly.

Cough, cough!!!! Sorry, my ex was in the Army (maybe I should have specified, but AF doesnt have an SPC) and the current promotion schedule is WAY faster for the Army than the AF (which my DH is in and it takes 5 years to get E-5, not 3). The names of ranks are different (ie an e-6 in the army is a staff sergeant, while and e-5 in the AF gets the name staff sergeant). Sorry. I have NEVER heard the AF gets promoted faster in my whole life and I grew up around the military (all branches). The AF doesn't go in front of a board like the Army does at the beginning. They have to test and they get a certain number of points, and with the downsizing its harder to get rank.
Oops. Sorry I threadjacked. I don't have anything against the Army, DH is trying to go Army OCS, just wanted to point out that they are different I guess. http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/afpromotions/a/afpromotion.htm

i think it's a year from the time you make e-3. df isn't here so i'm not positive... but i feel like that is right for his promotion schedule.

It's cool. I realized it came across as rude. Considering how dumb the AF people my DH seems to be working with they may be right. :)

It depends on his MOS. There are things like promotion points that need to be fulfilled prior for soldiers to get recommended for the board. Then comes the actual promo "board". It really depends though, there's automatic promotions as well. And then it usually depends on what he came in as...and also to consider: time in grade, and time in service. I'd tell him to check out http://www.armystudyguide.com/ there's lot of info about promotions there.

I am really not sure how long it takes, but it is one of the best pay increases:)
