View Full Version : early in pregnancy, tricare?
wife-n-mommy 02-21-2008, 12:00 AM Ok... so I went to self referal and had a confirmation blood test, which confirmed me at almost 5 weeks... so they told me I will see a nurse once a month on base and then will be referred to an OB/GYN in my third trimester ?? Does that sound right? They didn't even give me prenatal vitamins I had to buy OTC... and NO ultrasounds until the third trimester?? Also found out this base is not alowed to deliver babies or even staff OB's because of their history???
I carry the genes for Hypophosphatasia and talipes equinovarus (clubbed feet) and so does my husband... that means either of the disorders is a 1 in 4 possibility... and they want to give me basically NO prenatal care until the third trimester?? Has eny one else gone through this? Plus, I want a midwife anyway... how do I get the referal?
rosebud* 02-21-2008, 12:03 AM hmm something sounds weird, if there is no OB to see you, you should be able to get a referral out in town. Talk to the patient advocate to see what can be done. That doesn't sound right, they will sometimes not do an ultrasound till about 20 weeks that is normal though

I fought really hard with the hospital here to get the care that I wanted and that I felt was best for my child. They refused to give me those things so I just switched to standard. I'm much more confident now.
Victoria 02-21-2008, 12:32 AM I'd be contacting a Health Benefits Advisor QUICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EastEndGir1 02-21-2008, 10:34 AM I just switched to Tricare Prime. They have a OBGYN coming to the base doctors office to see me monthly and then I will deliver at a Naval Hospital 45 minutes away because they don't offer any services here on Ft. Meade. Kind of a pain in the ass. Maybe they could do the same for you??
I HOPE YOU GET IT ALL WORKED OUT!
instant_oatmeal 02-21-2008, 10:55 AM That doesn't seem right. I would try and get a referral to a civi doctor or something.
wife-n-mommy 02-21-2008, 07:04 PM I'm about to switch to standard and then get medicaid also to cover the difference since based on our salary we qualify. :dunno
I have an appointment with a nurse on Tuesday so I'm going to tell her my situation and that I need close monitoring to look for signs of possible defects that could be present... with Kylee I had an ultrasound every 2 months from 9 weeks and up, and I was seen monthly my ENTIRE pregnancy.
Does anyone know how to find a midwife that is covered by Tricare?? I asked at the Tricare desk in the hospital and they acted like I was an idiot.

I never thought about getting Medicaid to cover the difference! Thanks! I was worried about covering that, but it was really important to me to have what I think is best for my child (no matter how much said child is ticking me off by making me sick right now... lol).

Those are all the same people I have been talking to... :( I have actually spoken to 3 of the people on that list, that I know of. They all work at that hospital and that hospital, this base in general doesn't seem to give a shit. The one lady gave me a reason for their policy of seeing a nurse until the third trimester. She said that 70% of the people that come through that hospital pregnant miscarry befor the third trimester and why would they want to waste all that money on OB apointments for people who could miscarry...:reallymad:duh see... IDIOTS!!!
I am going to talk to the nurse and see if she will label me high risk and send me to MCG for a midwife and OB referal. If that doesn't work I am going to switch to standard and apply for medicaid. I think I have it figured out. Another option is to use my FIL's address and it's out of this district, then I can get an good OB in Atlanta (2 hours away) and just make the drive there every month...

After my experience, I recommend that you just screw it and change to standard. Either way, I hope it all works out with ya!

That sounds INSANE to ONLY see a Nurse Practitioner until your 3rd trimester. Read your Tricare handbook!!!!!!!
Mosley04 02-21-2008, 11:28 PM Something doesnt sound right about that situation. I hope that you do figure everything out though. Good luck and congrats on the new baby!!!!
letgo0527 02-21-2008, 11:34 PM You need to be seeing an OB...not just any random doctor. You should be able to get a referral for an off base OB...call tricare. You get at least 2 ultrasounds....one to confirm the pregnancy/due date and one to check for fetal defects around 20 weeks. Something is off, you need to talk to them.

I know... and I did!! That's why I'm so pissed!!! I have to either get a referal or switch to standard. Basically they said those are my options if I want more than a nurse. And... I've gone up there twice and they won't even give me prenatals. I have really low phosphorous and vitamin D even without pregnancy so I need to get a prenatal specifically designed for that. Even crazier... they prescribe the same prenatal to everyone, regardless of your vitamin needs...
Victoria 02-21-2008, 11:41 PM DEMAND a midwife then!!! You SHOULD be entitled to one!!!!
FTCWifey 02-22-2008, 09:32 AM Don't get yourself labeled as highrisk if you plan to get a midwife. They will not except you. Your local MTF should have a list of the covered OBs and CNMs. The nurse should give it to you at your next appointment. What region are you for Tricare? I am Tricare North I think, and I have been seeing a midwife in a group practice since I was 6 weeks. I got in early because they needed to make sure it wasn't ectopic since I have a higher risk for it. Otherwise I wouldn't have been seen until 8-10 weeks. But there is no reason that you should have to wait until the 3rd trimester for proper prenatal care.

That does not sound right! I'd schedule a visit with your PCM tell him about your history and the risks of complications and be very insistant about a referral to an OB.
