View Full Version : Caster oil...
Joelschic 02-22-2008, 02:07 PM Hey ladies!
Any of you ever taken caster oil to try to help you go into labor?? I'm thinking about taking it today. If you have taken it...did it work? Did it give you bad diarrhea? Any input would be great!! Thanks! I should add that I am almost 4 cm and my doctor told me she can't believe I haven't had the baby yet. So, it's not like I'm taking it starting out at 1 or 2 cm.
jays_wifeyUSMC 02-22-2008, 02:13 PM I don't think you should do that...:( The baby will come naturally. :goodvibes
reynswife 02-22-2008, 02:20 PM Me personally, I wouldn't take it. The side effects of that stuff are horrible from what I heard. And if your body isn't ready, it'll just make you sick and even more miserable.
Good luck to you. Hope your baby comes soon!:goodvibes
I almost did and after my labor nurse telling me horror stories so glad I didn't!
Cangel14 02-22-2008, 02:27 PM Talk to your OB/midwife before taking it!!! It can help induce labor, BUT it will give you bad diarhea and that is NOT fun when you're in labor!!!! I personally believe in just letting the baby come when they're ready... I know you're probably uncomfortable, but hang in there!
bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad idea
just my .02
Joelschic 02-22-2008, 02:32 PM Jeeeeeeeesh. okay. I've heard more bad than good about this stuff. I guess I'll just wait. I HATE waiting!! I lost my mucus plug last Sunday....shouldn't it be ANY day now? Gosh.
I lost my plug with both girls weeks before i was induced (overdue 10 days with first, 39 weeks with 2nd) lol
and i can def sympathize with you on the waiting. i HATE waiting.
are you having a boy or a girl? you ready to be a mommy x 2 ;) :D
Caimbrie 02-22-2008, 02:46 PM I was advised to do it by my miswife with my oldest.. but I was already starting labor.. I tried it for my second son.. all it will do is make you VERY sick (you will have diarrhea that hurts so bad you'll want to die btdt. I VERY sick both times).. if the baby isn't ready to come yet, it's not going to make the baby come.
Joelschic 02-22-2008, 02:49 PM I lost my plug with both girls weeks before i was induced (overdue 10 days with first, 39 weeks with 2nd) lol
AHHH!!! No! don't tell me you were 10 days overdue! I don't want to hear that!!! :eek I NEED to have this baby soon. My dh is leaving for Iraq March 6th...He's coming to see us (from MOB) next Saturday and the baby NEEDS to be here!!! That's why I was just about to try the caster oil. I guess I'll just keep up the squats and walking!
Shep's Wife 02-22-2008, 02:50 PM I did it once, NEVER AGAIN!
Just have some patience, I know how annoying that can be to hear :teehee
3 of my kids where late, I am talking like into 42 weeks I am going to explode late!!
Joelschic 02-22-2008, 02:51 PM and i can def sympathize with you on the waiting. i HATE waiting.

I am having another girl :) I'm very happy about that! I am ready to have 2 kids. I know it's a lot more work, but I am a SAHM and this is what I signed up for!! :)

Man, I seriously didn't know it gives people diarrhea THAT bad. I'm really glad I asked for advice on here before I took it! Thankyou for your input!

Wow!!! 42 weeks-huh?! I :pray that doesn't happen to me. :eek
Mosley04 02-22-2008, 02:55 PM I would talk to your doctor or your nurse first. I have heard it gives you bad stomach problems, plus, maybe the baby is not ready to come yet.:D
could you talk to your ob about induction? you're far enough along and dilated far enough i'm surprised they didn't suggest it.... maybe that way you could have the baby no later than when your hubby gets there?
mrskmw 02-22-2008, 03:38 PM Lord don't do that. I did it with my 2nd and i would NEVER EVER EVER suggest it to anybody! I had a horribly violent labor and I thought my dr was going to kill me. So not worth it.

Oh it does. I sat there in tears saying I'd never do it again.... and I'm a person who had completely natural labor with no meds for my first son... The pain the caster oil gave me was horrible.
rosebud* 02-22-2008, 03:40 PM anything meant to start labor will not work if your body is not ready to go into labor. Doing things to jump start labor don't work if the baby isn't ready to come out. sorry :hugs waiting sucks

:yes me too. I literally thought I was going to die and was within 5 minutes of not being able to make it to the hospital. I swore to god I'd never even look at that stuff again. I've never had pain like that in my life and had to give up any ideas of an epi. Total labor of an hour :lmao

It didn't speed my labor with my first up at all. I still stalled and needed pit... but the pain from the HORRID diarrhea was just so awful. I was on the toilet the entire night crying saying I'd never do it again :no
ashleyd 02-22-2008, 03:43 PM I have a friend who took it. She said it gave her diarrhea soo bad, she was embarrassed in the hospital.

My mom about kicked my ass when I told her what I had done. She was working L&D that night and was there when I came in. I wasn't in the hospital 10 mins before I started pushing. I walked in the room pulled my clothes off (didn't even go in the bathroom lol) and said "im having this baby NOW". They couldn't believe it. It took it about 8 hours to start to work but once I had my first contraction they were never more than 2 mins apart. I was throwing up during labor. God it was horrible. THey said that my body just couldn't keep up. :spank bad bad me

My Dr said she would induce, but I talked it over with my hubby and he really doesn't want me to. They had to induce me for my first child because my labor stalled, and it was very painful. I really want to do it without an epi this time, so I guess I just have to wait.... Dh DID say that if I haven't had her by the time he comes that I can get induced, but no sooner...
Joelschic 02-22-2008, 03:49 PM I have a friend who took it. She said it gave her diarrhea soo bad, she was embarrassed in the hospital.
That's another thing that is keeping me from taking it now!!! I don't want to be pushing this baby out and having diarrhea at the same time!! I really don't want to do that to my Doctor. :pukey

Eeek!! That sounds horrible!
Maybe set it up for an induction for the day or day after your hubby gets home? that way, you're at least set up IF the worst should happen.
try walking or nipple stimulation?
navywifeplus3 02-22-2008, 04:04 PM I heard this tip alot when I was pregnant with ds, however I never tried it myself. It causes diarhea and that will dehydrate you, causing a multitude of other issues. Most doctors will tell you to stay away from that stuff!

Oh my gosh...I HAVE been walking! SOOOO much. Walking and squats. The whole nipple stimulation is a little scary to me in that I've heard it can give you VERY hard and random contractions. I haven't heard a lot of good about that either. Do you know anyone who's tried it??
I hadn't even thought of at least setting up an induction day. Thanks very much for that tip. I know my Dr is VERY busy, so I should set it up today.
I seriously wouldn't be all about having this baby early if it weren't for this stupid deployment. It really threw a monkey wrench into things. Both me and my dh want him to see her before he leaves. It's so hard...
oh i totally get what you mean. march is still a week away. a lot can happen in a week :) but yea, you should set up the induction so you at least have an eviction date set for sure so you know that your husband will be there :) call your doctor today :giggle
i tried EVERYTHING with both my kids. they were stubborn. you'd think at 4 cms, you'd be having the baby LOL

Thankyou so much for all your help!! I really appreciate it :)
:hugs i hope it happens for you soon! :D
Devinn 02-22-2008, 04:36 PM if all the DONT DO IT posts didn't scare you off of it....
let me throw this out there. There have been TONS of instances of women taking castor oil and not only did THEY get diarrhea....the baby passed meconium in utero as well....either due to undue stress on the body or because of the castor oil.
You DONT want that.

That's a scary thought. Very. Thankyou for sharing that!
Darushka 02-22-2008, 05:01 PM If you're going to try to stimulate labor, I'd do something more pleasant - like a massage or pedicure. I heard massaging your ankles can bring on labor. I got a pedicure on my due date with my ds, and went into labor 3 days later. ;)
My SIL swears by massage. She said it was the reason her labor was so easy with her son.

lol... at that point, he was probably ready anyway... but shit, it's worth a shot :D
HEIDI 02-22-2008, 05:27 PM Castor oil worked with my dd...
Jordan 02-22-2008, 05:34 PM I was advised by my midwife not to do it. He said it would just give me the shits. Instead of just being pregnant and miserable, I would still be pregnant and miserable and stuck on the toilet. He DID, however, give me some other ideas, and it may have just been a coincidence, but it just so happened that on the day that we tried ALL the ideas in one day, that was the day I had my son.
letgo0527 02-22-2008, 05:54 PM Yes I tried it with ds...it made me sooo sick...want my advice....don't do it...just be patient...it's not worth the runs and :puke .....
Not to mention it's been known to actually cause the baby to poo in utero....I didn't find that out until after I tried it, thank God ds was ok....
