They make the changes right away, and it depends on what day it is if it will be effective for the following payday.

If you make changes before the 6th of the month, the changes will be effective for the midmonth paycheck. If you make changes before the 22nd of the month, they will be effective for the end of month paycheck(which pays on the 1st).
