I did a surprise party. He left in the summer so we had a cookout (with all of his buddies) aroudn the pool in my (well my parents') backyard lit with tiki torches. One of his friends is a baker so she did a cake and made it camo with the icing and such. The guys went across the street and played some touch football before it got dark and then we all just hung out and whatnot.

yeah that's what i was thinking of doing. my dad knows the owner of a nice clubhouse so we could rent that out..which would be awesome! it was supposed to be a surprise but his sister kinda ruined that..lol

we did red and white table cloths and the star shaped balloons in red blue and silver and had confetti sprinkled on the tables and whatnot. We had a good time and he enjoyed it. I used my film camera (b/c it was dusk and my digital wasnt' cooperating) and the film got ruined so i don't have pics of it :(

That's so cute! My db's going away party was rather simple.. I went out to eat with him and his fam at his favorite restaurant, then we met up with his friends and just kinda hung out. I definitely would say plan something first :yes It's nicer to keep it with only really close friends/family, tho. But that's just me ^.^ As long as he's doing something he loves with the people he loves

Keep in mind that I am having a hard time committing but I try to walk and TRY to eat balanced meals. I cut out all sugar drinks. I also get those 100 calorie snacks. Sometimes I want to eat just for the sake of and at least I know its only 100 calories. I think its working because I loss about 3 since he's been gone and he left on the 12th. Not much but better than nothing. What are you doing?

I don't really have any suggestions to add, everything has pretty much been said that we did, But a word of advice, Spend every minute you can with him, I went through a depressed pull away phase before he left and couldn't spend time with him b/c of my emotions that I didn't want him to see and I regret every minute we didn't spend together. And Take TONS of pictures of the party and especially of you and him, even stupid ones, trust me they'll make you laugh when he's gone and he'll love getting them in the mail. :) Try getting only one roll developed at a time so you have something to look forward to everyweek when you don't get much mail. I hope your party turns out great :)
