View Full Version : AIT and family emergency
Mak327 02-26-2008, 09:11 PM Has anyone had someone leave AIT for a family emergency. Did you go through the red cross like they give you the information for for when they're in basic and whatnot or did he just go to his command and ask.
DF's grandmother had a mild heart attack and has pneumonia. She already has a pacemaker and fluid in her lungs and about a bazillion other things. We're hoping she gets the OK, but his aunts, mom, and I just need to know the steps to go through in case she gets any worse. He's already not handling that he's not here very well, and if it gets any worse...
We just need to know...
advice/stories/etc appreciated
Waking_Hour 02-26-2008, 09:17 PM My db at the time had to leave his tech training because of a death in the family. All of that went through the red cross. I guess his family did that. Sorry I don't know much of what happened.
wife-n-mommy 02-26-2008, 09:43 PM I know of a couple guys in my husband's training unit that left for a week or 2 for stuff like that. I just asked him to ask the guy he's friends with how they did it. He said in his case, his family called the company chaplain and the chaplain passed the word to the command and then they went and told him and they had it verified by a doctor or something. They let him leave for 5 days. He said it depends on the command and the situation. But I guess call his chaplain.
rosebud* 02-26-2008, 09:44 PM Red cross is usually how i handled situations like those. also the chaplain is helpful as well.
Mak327 02-26-2008, 09:48 PM He's in AIT for Chaplain's Assistant (that's his MOS) so I wouldn't know the chaplain associated.... we still have all the red cross information from when he went to Basic so i guess worse come to worst, we'll just use that and correct the unit and whatnot.

you should be able to search the base (where his AIT is) website, you can find the company he's in... a letter and 3 numbers... ex. C-123, then there should be a list of the chain of command for the company, it'll have all the sgts, the commander, and the chaplains, along with the phone numbers. If you wanna PM me I could try to help you find it if it would help. :)
LindsayLin 02-27-2008, 12:01 AM DH had to leave AIT when I gave birth to our son. They induced me b/c of preeclampsia, and we had to call the Red Cross. He managed to make it (with 2 layovers) from Arizona to Virginia about 10 minutes before I actually gave birth. They let him have 10 days off, so he graduated AIT about 2 weeks after everyone else in his original class did.
bubbaswife 02-27-2008, 12:07 AM You have to go through Red Cross and if she does pass, they need a confirmation of death, whatever that means. DF's grandmother passed while he was at Corps school and that's what we were instructed to do.
Sabrena Renee 02-27-2008, 12:09 AM during boot camp DH's great grandma died but we called the red cross and all that and they said that people's spouses and kids die sometimes so we didnt feel to bad wiating to telll kyle untill after boot camp.
Mak327 02-27-2008, 12:11 AM Looks like red cross is the answer. I have that information on a notecard in my purse and one slid in my phone now, just in case. Thanks girls.... i figured that would be the answer, but was just making sure... he's going to tell his sergeants tomorrow too just as a heads up so maybe they'll work with him if he has to leave too.
BubMunkeyBles 02-27-2008, 01:46 AM Good luck. I know sometimes they will give you a hassle if its not immediate family.. Best of luck.

I"m aware of that... but if i have the phone number and information. I can call his family (who hasn't left the hospital since) and they can go through the motions. They just have no access to a computer (and to be honest wouldn't know where to start looking for the information). They all went straight there from work/job/picking up kids/etc so no one thought to carry around how to reach him in an emergency.
I have it in my purse and slid in to my phone on a notecard now so at the drop of a hat, we can get in touch with him rather than having to do the research once we get an outcome or test results.
Thanks girls
navywifeplus3 02-27-2008, 11:14 AM Dh left boot camp, for a week when his grandfather died. I know they don't always allow for grandparents, but in dh case, grandfather was his father figure for most of his childhood and he had lived with him for years. I contacted red cross and they ran with it from there. I called the red cross at 11:48 pm on June 15th (about 10 minutes after Grandpa died) and he was on a plane by noon June 16th, on his way home. Ultimately it is the commands decision as to whether or not they let them leave. How soon he is able to leave will also depend on how soon the red cross letter is delivered and how fast the command authorizes the leave. It took his command less than an hour to have him approved, what took the longest was waiting on the letter to arrive and then flight availability. I pray his grandma gets better and it doesn't come to that, but if not good luck.

With dh's grandpa, they contacted the nursing home and they confirmed his passing. To the OP, be sure the family gives the red cross the doctor and hospital names as well as their direct contact info when notifying red cross, it will help speed the process up, if they (the red cross) don't have to got hunting for Grandma's health care team.
