I almost became an AW when I was in the Navy. It can involve many hours in the helocopter and he would need a higher security clearance. Also, I think water rescue is involved in that but I am not sure about that one. He would definitely need to go through that training because of the amount of time he would be flying over water. I had to go to a specail board to be considered and they asked me some interesting questions like "How would you feel about dropping a bomb and knowing innocent civillians maybe killed?" My answer surprised them especially since I am a woman. I told them I wouldn't know until I actually did it. I know, not exactly a nice answer. I didn't persue it because I ended up getting involved with Dh and I would have had to transfer to Florida for school and I didn't want to leave so I struck for AE instead and stayed in Lemoore, CA. Oh and the security clearance forms are like an inch thick... at least they were when I had to fill them out, sheesh, and this was in 1995.

I used to work with a ton of AWs when I was Active Duty, they were P3 guys, which is a good community to be in. I would check the advancement potential for AWs. Back then it was bad, but I have been out for Eons....LOL.

Depends on what type of AW he wants to be...Does he have an idea what he wants to do? The AW school is in Jax. It is about a year long...good luck

My husband is an FE and flies with tons of AW's........if you have any questions you can PM me and I can relay them to him. They have different jobs and actually my husband's job will eventually be in the AW fold.......

He's a P3 guy and we LOVE the P3 community.

DH was an AW, he's a P-3 guy. He's NAC. Advancement SUCKS to E-7, which explains why DH just crossrated out of AW to NC. More opportunities. Though he's wanting to go back to a P-3 squadron, he really misses it LOL! He misses the commroderie. (spelling LOL)

I think the road to AW is long. Lots of schools, SERE, etc. DH at this point gets career flight pay, which rocks.

DH spent 13 yrs as an AW, and now 1 yr as an NC. He loves that job too.

It ended up being it wasn't that great of an option for DH to crossrate to AW. He's still pursuing crossrating to a different rate though. How did your DH's crossrate work?
