View Full Version : Pregnancy and Depression
flowerchild 02-27-2008, 03:24 AM Before I got pregnant I was on an anti-depressant that I was told was safe to take during pregnancy. Well, all of the sudden I'm pregnant and it's apparently not. So I had to go off of it. I figured I would be fine, but on top of being pregnant (a pregnancy that has taken most of my food choices away from me, made me a couch potato, and taken away the big "O"), I've just moved away from my family and friends (completely across the country), my father is dying, I don't have a lot of friends in my new area, and my husband is gone.
Soo... as you can imagine... it's already coming back. Has anyone else successfully dealt with depression during pregnancy?
I know that exercise is supposed to help, but I'm usually feeling to sick to even get off the sofa (heartburn and nausea), being around friends helps, but as aforementioned, I don't really have many.
Any suggestions? My next doctor's appointment isn't until the 3rd of March.
Oh, and I've been suffering from depression for many many years, and usually I'm ok for 10 months or so off of my meds if I have familial support and family members aren't dying, but for me, the depression will probably have to be treated for the rest of my life (as Tricare does not cover the only therapy that ever worked for me and we can't afford it), so there was no waiting until I "got better" to TTC.
Corenn 02-27-2008, 03:28 AM I was actually looking into anti-depressants while pregnant..and they say Zoloft is safe to take during pregnancy..but in the 3rd trimester it can be traced in the babys system..and then also breastfeeding...but it's unlikly (sp?)
I suffered really bad post partum depression with DD1 so i started looking into to it for after pregnancy...i can't remember the site i went to but my friend knows about it...i'll ask her and PM you the info tomorrow

That's what they took me off of. :( Yes, please let me know. It's just starting, so I want to catch it before it gets out of control.
mary79 02-27-2008, 03:51 AM First of all :hugs and I'm sorry you are dealing with all this.
I'm on Zoloft. I was on it my last pregnancy also. It is the only one that I have heard of that is safe while pregnant and breast feeding . I'm not saying its 100% safe, nothing is. But for me its safer than if I were to go off of them and be really depressed . I would go to your Doctor and tell them what you are feeling. It is good to let them know if you are depressed now because you have a higher risk of developing PPD. I had it so bad with my last pregnancy ,that it was hard to even know how to help myself.

I'm really mad at the doctors here at the MTF. They're awful and they're the ones who took me off my meds (they also have a history of misdiagnosing... and omg I won't even get into my experiences). I finally went Standard and I'm seeing someone else on the 3rd. I think I'm going to call tomorrow and see if they can get me in sooner though. For the depression and some other issues.
*Sarah* 02-27-2008, 03:55 AM i hope you are able to find something. i know there are safe antidepressents you can take while pregnant. the third isnt too far off, so just wait and talk to your dr. i hope you are able to get the help you need. :hugs
flowerchild 02-27-2008, 04:08 AM Thanks for the hugs. I've got you guys to rely on, right? :) So what if you're not all in WA.
Lckychrmzz 02-27-2008, 09:42 AM I dont know about depression but have you checked out www.safefetus.com? Also just wait a week and those big "O"s will be mindblowing! I mean like "holy shit!" Way stronger and longer then before lol
~Crystal~ 02-27-2008, 12:45 PM I'm sorry that you are experiencing everything that you are. I went off Lexapro while we were TTC. The doctor I was seeing in WA told me that Prozac was safe to use while pregnant. I'm not sure how true that is though. I'm opted to not take anything since nothing is 100% safe. I have bad days and I have good days. Just hang in there. Things will start getting better.....especially with the sickness and big "O"!

That's good to know! Right now I just kinda cramp up... :(

JustBreathe 02-27-2008, 10:01 PM Wow, I just checked that site and it said everything I am on is toxic to a baby! If there are meds that you HAVE to be on, how do you cope with that during pregnancy? :puzz

I was always told it's a risk vs. benefit thing.
jjcreekmore 02-27-2008, 10:23 PM I'm on wellbutrin... When I asked my doctor which one was safer he said they were all pretty much the same since they all target the same place in your brain and work the same and that you can them during pregnancy although you really want to steer clear of "addicting" drugs such as klonipan, etc. he said they all offer risk to you and the baby but you have to weigh out the pro's and con's. If it's just a little depression don't take anything but if it's affecting your life (no excersise, not eating, temper, etc.) then a small dose is fine. I was the same thinking that "certain" drugs were worse than other but he said they all have the same ingrediants with little variations. Hope this helps!!! Oh, Wellbutrin is working for me a lot better than lexapro. you might want to ask about that. :)
