my son is 3 almost 4 and i am just curiouse if anyone knows why he is not gaining any weight i take him out a whole lot to tryo to get some meat on them bones.. he has weighed 28.8 well it ranges from 28.4 to 28.8 pounds for gthe past yr my niece who was a premie baby weighs more than him and she is also taller. he is like the most skinniest 3 yr around. i have him in 3t but i take them n so they will fit (:pray he will grow into them) i took him to the docotr and they didnt say anything besides how much does he eat . i told them it is hardc to actually to get him to sit down in 1 spot to eat unless he is really hungry. like he wont eat breafast (i have wasted a whole lot of cereal, oatmeal, and stuff) he will try to go all the way to lunch and even then when i make him something to eat he'll eat maybe 4 bites and then runs off to play.. so i always make sure i have snacks (his snacks are fruit he doesnt eat sweets) avaiable to him.

just curiouse if this is normal?

Chris, my 3 yr old, only weighs 26 lbs. He has been that weight for awhile now. He is getting taller, but he is also thinning out. His ped chalks it up to the tall skinny males on both sides of the family. I think as long as he is still getting taller and meeting milestones, there isnt anything to worry about. If you are really worried, make an appt with his ped to discuss it.

Our youngest is almost 4 and just within this past month hit 30 pounds. All three of our children are tiny. As long as he's active and healthy I wouldn't be concerned.

I'd chalk it up to fantastic metabolism!!! Ethan's 35lbs, but his waist is more of an 18 month old. He fits 18 month pants just fine, except for its length.
Just make sure he's taking a daily vitamin!!! :D

It is hard to get 3 yr olds to actually sit down and eat. Weight gain does slow down some when they reach that age. I think the biggest thing that doctors look for is if the child is staying on their growth curve. (the chart that they fill out for weight and height at all his well child appointments) It is not so important how they weigh compared to another child their age. For example, if your child was in the 50 percentile for weight when he was born, they will want him to be somewhat close to 50% for weight at age 3. If he was in the 50% at birth, and is only the 5% now, they would probably have cause to be concerned. Does that make any kind of sense? They have the charts online, you can check them and plug in his weight and height. Google something like "pediatric growth charts" and it should bring up a few links.

My son is almost 4 and he weighs about 35 pounds. I really don't think you need to worry. If he was hungry he would eat and I know at this age it is SO hard to get them to focus on something like a meal. Especially with an energetic boy.

I think something is lost here:

one he needs to eat breakfast.

it sounds to me that meals are not an integral part of your every day routine.

this behavior is a learned behavior- you probably let him eat on the run at 18 months and now that he is 3 you want him to sit for meals..

you will have to change the way you do meals-

no tv- no music, he needs a schedule: breakfast at 8, lunch at 12 snack at 3 dinner at 6.. ect.. AND NO SNACKS in between.

why should he sit down to eat when you don't make him.

ALL children from the very beginning should be taught to sit at meal time with thier parents.

what will happen in 2 yrs when he goes to school and has to go to the cafeteria to eat, and you get a call every day for him running around and not sitting down..

come on- you are not raising children but adults, and when you raise kids this way you are setting them up for failure....

this did not happen over night- and it will not change over night.

I don't mean to sound angry- but when you work in child care as long as I have, and pre k.. and I have to spend weeks ( literally) to correct behaviors like this it takes away from every other child in the group...

AND every child WILL sit for lunch at school or day care- because it is the law in every state.

um wow...I'm guessing Dawn is the "do it strictly by the book" type :scared

all parenting techniques are different. if they weren't...we would be some very boring people with our only difference being genes, and not the way we were raised too. I think you're doing just fine as a mother, don't let anyone tell you differently.

As for him not gaining weight, it's normal. My brother and I were both EHTEOPIAN skinny. My mom was a single working mother so we would eat mac n' cheese and processed foods everyday, all day. And we were still shockingly skinny. The doctors would ask us if my mom fed us! It was that bad. I didn't pass 70lbs until I was in 8th grade I got my period. So yes, him not gaining weight is normal, sometimes it's just the metabolism! I didn't get my first growth spurt until I was 7! Every kid is different, so I wouldn't worry about it too much for now. He's a little boy, running around and working off all those carbs. If he hits 7 and he still only weighs 26lbs...then I would start calling the doctor ;)
