So, we've been in the process of getting his speech evaluated since Jan. Our appt at Portsmouth told me that he had a severe phonological disorder and significant delays in everything else. So they referred us to the city's school system for further evaluation. We had that appt today. They tell us that he only has a mild delay but he has some significant developmental delays. I honestly have no clue what is going on at this point. I don't know why the developmental delays haven't been caught by his other docs. I'm not even sure he has the delays and it wasn't just mainly him being incredibly uncooperative. I'm at such a loss about all of this right now. Oh, he also has some possible hearing issues in the higher frequencies. Once again he had been tested at Portsmouth but they said that it was just negative air pressure, but the test today didn't show any negative pressure they so referred him for more testing. I'm so tired of getting all sorts of conflicting results. Also, they aren't going to be able to get him for further testing until MAY 20th and don't have to have everything completed until June 19th. I'm just stressed out about all of this and ready to find out what is really going on with him. :tears

The wait lists for special services like that have got to be the most frustrating thing ever. I 100% understand how you feel and it's the worst feeling in the world! :hugs Have you checked into a local program? Out here we have Head Start, and they help out with services in the meantime until the school stuff kicks in. That's how we were able to get so much help so fast. I know that CA is fantastic with all of this, so I am not sure if they have it there, but it's definitely worth checking out! There is also a lot of stuff you can do at home too. What delays do they think he has? Is it motor skills? Speech? A few of them? Seriously, feel free to PM me whenever, because I know exactly how you feel! Terrified, frustrated, discouraged, annoyed, upset, confused... it's such a fucking roller coaster of emotions! Keep your chin up, you are doing the right thing! :hugs

Thanks. I've thought about the head start program, but you have to wait for all of this stuff to get through before you can qualify for it here. I just can't believe that the school system really takes this long and Tricare just referred me out to them because of his age, so now we just have to wait. But the main reason we were referred was because the speech pathologist at Portsmouth said he had severe speech delays and that was it. But the pathologist today said that he only has mild delays in speech, nothing that would qualify for therapy right now. But they said he had delays in his fine motor skills, social skills, speech and some other things. He wasn't getting his colors right, counting or following basic 3 step directions. I would hope that if the delays were as much as they were saying that they were that I would have noticed. I really hope that is was mainly him not wanting to cooperate because it just makes me feel horrible and that I haven't done enough with him. :sigh

That's crazy it takes so long to get the evaluations from the school!

I was in your shoes about a year ago........my youngest while I always felt had some autism characteristics was evaluated and has some delays in his motor skills (shocked about the gross motor skills as I don't see it until they point out the patterns), speech, social development etc.

He's in special ed preschool at our base elementary school and it's done WONDERS for him. However there are times that I am not sure whether or not it's because he's grown up so much or if it really is all the therapies, but I won't question it because I do believe it's a combo of both.

Don't stress......he'll catch up! It's just good they caught it now instead of in a few years when things could be harder to work with.

Good luck!

Keep in mind the school district's policy on speech therapy/testing.......I know here in the state of Texas.........the school district's standards are lower than on the civilian side. So, my son qualified through the school system for awhile and was released even though they acknowledge he had a mild speech delay.........he still qualified on the civilan side for more therapy, which was a good deal. He got better results from the one on one therapy than the group session through the school. I would ask for a referral from the hospital to a civilan source on the outside.
