How did you formally become an Independent Contractor/Consultant? If you are one (self employed). Curious to know what state your in, field of work you do and how you set up formalized business/agreement and how you process 1099 for this and lastly and most importantly looking for a seasoned professional who's done this for a little while that is successful at this.

I am an IC, I am a medical transcriptionist. I am contracted through a company. As for the tax info, I'm not much help I just started and am still trying to figure everything out. I know I'm putting away 30% of my checks. But I am contracted through a company in Australia so I have even more to deal with!

I have a degree in medical transcription, coding, and billing. Is it hard to get into? I've never actually had any experience other than school.
* OP...sorry to threadjack*

Thanks ladies - actually looking for someone that is doing independent consultant work (where you are self-employed, i.e. independent contractor) but you have a formal agreement/contract through a local company and or companies and if you have a long distance field relationship (how did you secure that?!)

I believe with medical transcriptionist work to my knowledge. You pay a fee, tutorial - become certified, than work through a company. (That's more like a field employee) if you receive your checks from them and pay taxes through them. That's not the kind of info I'm looking for.

Specifically looking for independent consultant work (self employed) where you file a 1099 for taxes reasons.

Thanks!!!

I am self employed and pay my own taxes with the 1099. I just have a contract with the company that's it. I work on my own. I have a business license, therefore I'm an IC. In MT work you chose to be an employee or IC. If your an employee they supply the software, sometimes computer, you work a certain schedule, get benefits, etc.

I did an online school for MT and got this job from an affiliate with the school. They usually require 5 years experience but I scored high enough they hired me. Most companies you just test for them and if you score well enough they hire. Most want 2 yrs experience but if your good enough you can get that waived.

My husband is a small business owner. He types up his estimates and contracts using Quick Books software. We also have a payroll company that takes care of our pay, paying taxes and preparing 1099s for the employees that work for us.

You outsource payroll, 1099 and that's what I'm looking for information on - if you were a small business owner (i.e. self employed) and did all that personally - that's where I want information. Where'd you obtain the information for it and how to process it?

Basically, I'm looking for Small Business Enterprise information.

From the business perspective, your DH might be able to tell me how to become a formal entity (i.e. Independent Contractor, i.e. in his case - i.e. small business owner) but since you outsource your finances. I would need information elsewhere on how to do this?!
