I just filled up my car for $40.....I know, some of you are paying more..maybe you have a bigger car, truck, suv.....whatever. Maybe your gas is more expensive where you are. I was shocked yesterday when that total came up and it got me thinking.

I spend under $200 a month on gas. I live 10 minutes from work....My HUSBAND on the other hand spends over $600 a month in gas. He uses his truck for work and he puts ALOT of miles on that truck every week.

What have you done, or what can you do to maximize your travel dollars?

We dont go as many places anymore...Or we do everything we need to do on one day.

He takes the car over the SUV and his motorcycle.

I ride with other people more where in the past I would have not arranged my travel time s around other's schedules.

I don't do a whole lot of driving though.

We have gas coupons over here, it costs 50 bucks to fill my car if it's at empty. Christopher's car is only driven like 2 mins a day to work and back so we use practically nothing for that car. I fill up a couple times a month... that is plenty to go to base a few times a week, go out in town a couple times a month. If we go out in town more often, it def sucks, I have to buy another gas coupon book. So we try to balance out trips out in town and around the island, not going too often, but not sticking too close to base (makes you crazy!).

I pre-plan where I am going and make a day of it. Not as much go here there and everywhere as I please. I don't go out more than about 2 times per week at this point. I am really beginning to think I need to get a buggy for my horses.

I think about where I am going and don't use the car except for on the days I really have to such as going to school. We walk over to the mall or the park.

What I have done is on days I go to the commi. or dr. I go to stores that are on my way. That way since I'm already passing them I'm not using up anymore gas. Sometimes that isn't always possible but I try my hardest to keep it that way. I keep the heating and cooling to a minimum. I've been known to bring blankets for the older kids so I can leave the heat on 1. When it warms up I'm going to walk to school to drop Breanna off and pick her up. I also try to buy a smuch a sI can when I go places like the commi. and Walmart so I don't have to go back for awhile. Again, it doesn't always work but I try. The last time I filled up my gas tank it cost 66 dollars and some change. I make sure to only fill up twice a month and then John fills up an average of 3. We're averaging 200-250 a month. Now when he had his truck he was filling up 4-5 times a month at 65-80 each time. And that was almost 1 year ago. I hate that we had to get rid of his truck to get my van but that truck was killing us on gas.

When my car is on E it takes about $37-$40 to fill up. I fill up twice a month, every pay check, and it gets me through. Honestly the gas prices have effected me all that much. Maybe $20 a month tops. But I only have 1 vehicle and get about 400 miles to a tank. So I haven't really changed anything that I do. Still sucks though.

It costs us OVER 60 each to fill up my van and dh's truck.

With the prices the way they are we just dont go anywhere anymore( well I dont) dh still drives to work.

But i dont go anywhere if I have no reason to. We just cant afford it.

I still have to drive to work and everything in ND is so spread out, so I can't get away with not driving. We also don't have a lot of public transportation. The major kicker for me is I haven't been able to go home to see my parents as much. I am moving back there in like 6 weeks, and it is going to kill us moving all of my stuff because of the gas prices.

we buy cars with good gas mileage. i live only 5 minutes from work so that is fantastic for gas. i usually dont go out for lunch, i eat at my desk unless i have errands to run.
we have somehow managed to keep our gas usage fairly minimal.

I don't drive around just for the heck of it.. My car gets much better mileage than G's Jeep does, but he's a pain and won't drive it to work. We just allow for the extra money to fill up. It sucks, but we've kinda adjusted to it.

lol none because I don't drive very much.
we buy a full tank of gas almost every two weeks
So its like 80$ a month on gas

We are taking our major trip this year and cutting down on hotel costs. We talked about getting a nice hotel with a pool to let DS swim a bit but decided to down scale.

Honestly, It hasn't effected us that much. Having a child sure helps. I shop at the commissary but that is only aroud 2 blocks away and as for the other shopping, I don't do it. When I need to go somewhere I do it all in one trip.

We started doing that over a year ago because we realized what a waste it was to just drive around.

I can't wait for summer when we can walk more.

I fill up every 2.5 days of $70.00. Going to and from work is about 170 miles
DF lives right around the corner so on nice days he takes his motorcycle... I guess Im glad that I got laid off cause a month is usually around $450.00..... yikes..

I don't drive. :P It has made it more expensive for Adam though, but since he really only drives to work and back home it's something we can't really change. Everything else we do is close to home, like shopping, and we only go when necessary. So, besides going to see his sister on the other side of town once a month or so, we don't drive unless we have to. So, the costs are kind of unavoidable. It costs about $30 to fill the tank right now and Adam has to fill it up again every four or five days.

I will say that the gas prices have definitely effected our future vehicle purchases. Our next car will be a hybrid. :yes

My dh commutes a long way every day so there is just not much we can do to keep the gas costs down too much. He currently is using about $250 a month in gas:no That is JUST to get him to and from work in his smaller truck (Tacoma)!

We fill up our Camry about 2 times a month and it's about $45 each time. We don't even go many places other than what we need/have to.

So we are out about $340 a month and that is the bare minimum of what we can seem to reduce it to right now:no

It really hasn't affected us. even with me getting an SUV. Everything I need is within 0-10 miles of my house. I hardly ever get gas and Johns gas is paid for by his company so when hes home we just drive around his truck! Its been over a month since I last filled up and I'm only at 1/2 a tank.

We only have 1 car, and it is a Rav-4, so small. It costs about $40 to fill up nowadays. We probably use a tank a week. Dh goes to work, and I go to work, but during the day I stay home, and Dh stays home at night. And on the nights that we are both home, we stay in mostly.

Our car is tiny, and great on gas...we fill up for $32, and drive on it for a week at least.

I am buying a plane ticket to go home for a friend's childbirth in a month, though, because I found a ticket cheaper than what gas would cost. Now that's sad, when flying is cheaper!

We both work on base which is less then 5 minutes away and the commissary is around the corner, thank god. We aren't too effected by the cost of gas, mainly because we live close to what we need.

There is one silver lining in the gas prices for me - dh stopped stealing the Jeep from me in the mornings before I got up! It costs way too much for him to drive that back and forth to work.

Generally though, I only use the Jeep for short distances, and drive the dreaded car that I hate for longer. I try to keep a list of errands I need to run, and knock a bunch of them out at once with a planned route to save mileage and gas. And I think twice about running out for the random things that pop in my head.

I'm so happy to be living in an area where everything is close at hand. After living in GA, and driving crazy distances for things, moving to VA has been great for us on the gas.

Hasn't affected it at all. We drive when we have to drive, really no other option for us. We just try to find the most inexpensive gas when we need it.

Both of our cars are pretty good with gas. I barely use my car so I fill up probably once a month and his car every two weeks. Each of our car fills with about $34 with the current gas prices.
I try to do everything on the same trip and try not to make unnecessary drives around.

DH and I go threw 2 tanks of gas per pay period. His car takes 50 to fill up from E and my van takes 65-70 a tank... We try our best but most of the time we are putting it on a credit card.... :-/ life is shitty right now hopefully we sell this house soon!

It only costs us $30-35 to fill up. We just bought a new car and made sure the gas would be cheap. We live close to the base so I drop my husband off and pick him up. I usually only pick a couple of days a week to run errands. I think we only fill up about 1.5 times a month. So we only spend about $45-50 on gas a month which isn't bad at all.

It hasnt. I have always budgeted high for gas and we are still falling within it.

i have a ford f150 with TWO gas tanks... it was over $100 to fill it up BEFORE gas got over $3 a gallon.

that said, i have a suspended license and db is now deployed, AND the truck isn't working right now anyways, so i walk a lot, haha

My little car takes about $40 now to fill from E, the SUV takes around $80. Three years ago it was $20 & $40 respectively. SO in three years gas prices have doubled for us.

so far it has not been too terrible here in texas, we seem to have some of the lower gas prices around, unlike the west coast where we are from. it is up to $3.12 here, which is bad, but not terrible. It is $3.60 and higher out west :( We have been planning out trip back home for months now, and bought one way plane tix and are driving back with our other car. At first it seemed like a good plan, but now it's going to cost so much money :( Its an SUV and costs about $60 per fill up.......at 200 miles per tank, that 2200 miles is going to cost over $600 just in gas!!!!

I have a Hyundai Santa Fe and it costs about $55 to fill it up if it's totally empty. I have to fill up every 2 1/2 to 3 days. I drive 45 miles to work each way. I think I spend about $400 on gas and I bet DH spends $300... we still drive everywhere. The joys of California!

We were paying over 65$ every 2 weeks on gas.....and that was with only DH going to and from work and every once in a while going for a short drive. Right now DH is carpooling with a friend..one week we fill the tank, the other week his friend fills it. It is helping a bit.

Aurora
03-27-2008, 06:18 PM
I pay right around 55 for a full tank but I only fill up about every 3 weeks...I can make it a month if I don't go anywhere on the weekends.

I've stopped driving except on Tuesday when I have to go to work. If I need to go to the store or even get gas I go to the grocery store and gas station close to work (it happens to be the cheapest gas luckily) My biggest drain on gas money is going home to see my family but that hasn't kept me at home yet. It might start to soon though.

How have Gas Prices affected YOUR Driving...

Um, it has DEFINATELY upped my road rage. Cause I need to get where I am going! I don't have time to fuck around! I am wasting gas, dammit!

I meant this as a joke. Hope someone thought it was funny.

i am maximizing my trips. i don't go places unless i have to and try to get all my shopping done at one place or at the most do my shopping at places that are within walking distance.

I drive a hybrid, so the gas prices don;t really affect me that much...I pay about $50 a week for gas, but I drive over 30 minutes to work 5 days a week...I haven't really cut down on anything :dunno

i live less than 1/4 of a mile from walmart. so if i need something small or not too much i will load the kids up in the double stoller and walk. dollar general is next door so the same thing there. what sucks is i love to walk outside but where i live there are no sidewalks and the street is a major US highway. so i drive only at most 7 miles a day to go walk. i drive at less speed now or i turn off the ac and open the windows. i use the cruise control as often as i can with longer trips and that saves loads. right now I only have to fill up once a pay cycle at $50. i am sure that will change once DH comes home and we do some visiting and day trips.

Its $60 to fill up my van. We get decent gas mileage but with Jason's commute, it would kill us if he had to drive it to and from work every day. Luckily, he has a motorcycle that costs around $10 to fill up and he has to fill up twice a week.

Honestly, gas prices haven't affected my driving because I still have to go to school 5 days a week and my husband has to work 5 days a week. My husband fills up every other week while I fill up twice a week because I drive at least 55 miles a day.

So, we're not really changing anything. We just budget for high gas prices because we have to go to work and school.

We drive the MINI as much as possible instead of the minivan because it gets much better gas mileage.

Needless to say we don't go anywhere anymore.

My Prius costs $20 to fill and I go through about half a tank per week. That being said, I drive a lot more since it only costs $10 per week in gas. In Las Vegas we have to drive and the hybrid just makes it easier.

Before my husband got rid of his Tacoma we were spending $400 per month to fill it up.

LindsayLin
03-28-2008, 04:18 PM
Our SUV costs us about 60 dollars to fill up, I don't think gas prices have really affected our driving. DH drives less than a mile to work in our sedan, so we only have to fill that up about once a month. But I would go stir crazy if I had to stay in this piece of crap town, so in order to save my sanity I do travel the 60 miles (one way) to Tucson generally at least every other week.

However, we live a few blocks from the px, post office, drycleaners, commissary, shoppette, so if I just need a few things I put ds in his stroller and walk there. Not only is it better for us to get outside and walk, but it cuts down on gas if only just a little.

Hopefully when we move, I won't have to drive as much, but for right now the extra gas expenses are well worth it!

I get pretty good gas mileage with my car, though I am now paying $10 then I was before. As a college student every penny counts. I drive to the closest light rail station and then take that the rest of the way to school. Other than that, my driving habits haven't changed too much, since I didn't really do a whole lot of driving before.

We have somehow made a tank of gas last for 2 weeks :shake by limiting our driving. It wasn't hard to do being that we only have 1 main road :hehe
