my husband is a second degree blackbelt in two martial arts...I am sure that my DS will want to do them also since he is a daddys boy. But I dont want my 6 yr old kicking the crap out of kids and vice versa. If he was older then ok, its his choice.

We all did it

We are all brown belts in karate, kids are not taught to beat the crap out of each other.
They are taught to control their punches and hits and how to have discipline to analyze their next moves.

Proper supervision is the key.

Ultimate fighting is MMA...They fight one and one.

If you put on spike you will see it right now.

There is a HUGE difference between indiviual Martial Arts and Ultimate Fighting.

martial arts is different in my eyes than a no holds barred fighting type thing. martial arts teaches discipline whereas here kick the crap out of this kid does not. i dunno i think it's stupid to let kids just fight like that.

For little kids yes...But they use martial arts in MMA (mixed martial arts) which is what ultimate fighting is. I do not think that small children should do uf, but it becoming popular for people who know more than one type to do.

agree. if people are properly trained fine but little kids i don't think have the ability to understand UF. JMO

I agree and most arent at the black belt stages in atleast two arts. Thats why for 6 yr olds it makes no sense.

I see no problem with it. Like any other sport they will grow and mature to learn the rules. They are using protective gear and they are ref'ed. I see it as no different than martial arts or football. It isnt like they just go at it.

there is a HUGE difference...most MMA athletes have blackbelts in more than one martial art. My husband who is a second degree in tae kwon do and judo said there is no way our ds will do that at 6 yrs old.

I do not see the problem w/ MMA. DB does it and plans on keep doing it. It takes multiple disciplines and funnels them into a goal. Get the other guy out... I mean at 6 it is harsh, but it also prepares them for fighting while they are older. They fight in control circumstances and the rules are not the same for childrens MMA as Adults' MMA

That is why it is called MMA - mixed martial arts... the kids do not have black belts in multiple disciplines they are learning about using different styles cohesively to take down an opponent. :biting

How is it any different than an martial arts match? They fight there is the potential for injury and have rules to prevent those. I know kids as young as 5 in those.

My SO is a professional MMA fighter. I disagree with the news cast that says death is common in MMA, MMA is safer than boxing. As far as children, I think if they start young, they should not go all the way. They can learn the disciplines of the sport, which has turned to a lot of wrestling and jujitsu in recent years, without going full out. I know my son is interested in it, knowing that SO does it and trains others in it, but we have not let him go full out in it. But, if kids start boxing this early, then I see no difference starting MMA early, especially if they wear hear gear, they should not wear boxing gloves, though, as this is what makes boxing so much more dangerous than MMA.

I think that martial arts are fine for kids but not MMA. DB has been doing it since he was 16, and I mentioned this article to him. He was seriously shocked that people are letting 6 year olds do this.

i wouldn't let my kids start anything like that until they hit double digits. but i come from a more musical artistic background and never was really interested in anything like this. I think as long as it is controlled and the kids are learning that this is a sport, not a way to solve conflict, then yes but not as young as 6.
