I do not know much about it, but I am in the same situation. cgardner 03-29-2008, 11:38 PM I don't know much about it, except that I've heard about how bad he wants to do it for three years now, and apparently he is for reals going to selections when he gets back from afghanistan. we shall see. lemc81 03-29-2008, 11:48 PM What kind of stuff do you want to know? almostdavis61207 03-30-2008, 12:31 AM How much will he be gone? How hard would it be to have a family? sweetdreamer_08 03-30-2008, 12:35 AM i know that in special forces they are in combat for 3 months and 3 months out...but thats all i really know about it because db wanted to do special forces when he comes back from iraq almostdavis61207 03-30-2008, 12:47 AM thanks! crewchiefwife 03-30-2008, 01:59 AM my BIL does 8 months gone 4 months back he went to two years of ranger school first anything else just ask and ill ask my sister HollySunshine 03-30-2008, 02:01 AM i'm so glad you posted this...DB is talking about it too! jellybeanqueen 03-30-2008, 08:22 AM my BIL does 8 months gone 4 months back he went to two years of ranger school first anything else just ask and ill ask my sister .... why 2 years of ranger school? maybe your counting other trainings together if he did them as a lump, bc ranger school isnt 2 years..... crewchiefwife 03-30-2008, 12:07 PM .... why 2 years of ranger school? maybe your counting other trainings together if he did them as a lump, bc ranger school isnt 2 years..... he did it all in one big lump LoveKiss 03-30-2008, 12:23 PM DB is not special forces, but deploys in a similar manner. Depending on exactly what he does, be prepared to know even less that you do now and for him to be gone on a moment's notice. Just because the plan is for him to deploy in month X for 4 months, doesn't mean that he won't deploy in month Y for who knows how long instead. Even when he is stateside, DB occasionaly has to disappear for a few weeks at a time. I think it takes a lot of trust and understanding and patience and flexibility to deal with this kind of life/schedule. But, if it is what he REALLY wants to do, would you honestly want to say no? i.luv.my.soldier 03-30-2008, 01:36 PM thanks for all your replies. i support my dh no matter what he will do, i just don't want him to make a quick decision and then regret it. i know it must be hard to deal with this job as a family. he's been deployed twice and i hate it, obviously. and i just don't want him to be gone more than he needs to be. he tells me the deployments aren't as long as regular deployments so i don't know. he has about three years left and i thought the plan was to get out after that, this just kinda suprised me i guess. as far as the training goes, he's been through selection before, so he thinks he probably doesn't have to do it over. he's already airborne qualified and ranger qualified. anyone know how much more training there is and how long that will take? define 03-30-2008, 03:38 PM thanks for all your replies. i support my dh no matter what he will do, i just don't want him to make a quick decision and then regret it. i know it must be hard to deal with this job as a family. he's been deployed twice and i hate it, obviously. and i just don't want him to be gone more than he needs to be. he tells me the deployments aren't as long as regular deployments so i don't know. he has about three years left and i thought the plan was to get out after that, this just kinda suprised me i guess. as far as the training goes, he's been through selection before, so he thinks he probably doesn't have to do it over. he's already airborne qualified and ranger qualified. anyone know how much more training there is and how long that will take? Did he pass and get selected after he went through selection? Did he drop out? Was he med dropped? As far as I know, you have to go through selection, pass, and get selected because you can go through the training which I believe is two years. So he most likely will have to go through selection again.. i.luv.my.soldier 03-30-2008, 04:15 PM Did he pass and get selected after he went through selection? Did he drop out? Was he med dropped? As far as I know, you have to go through selection, pass, and get selected because you can go through the training which I believe is two years. So he most likely will have to go through selection again.. he did the selection and passed , then did the airborne. he dropped out on his own because of personal issues at the time. that was 4 years ago. he said the recruiter he talked to said that he most likely wouldn't have to go to selection again. he did the ranger course about 2 years later. Leleya 04-22-2008, 12:12 AM i know that the training for special forces lasts for about 2 years. first is selection for about 3 weeks, then Small unit tactics for 7 weeks, then MOS training for 12 weeks, then UW training for 7 weeks, then language training is between 16-24 weeks depending on the training, and SERE training is 3 weeks and finally he becomes a Special Forces Soldier. My bf is going through the same thing except he came in as a special forces candidate. I know whatever language they are put with is the area they will end up being deployed too. I know my bf is in the third category for languages and wants to do russian which most likely will put him in either europe or africa. If you have any questions about special forces I was informed very well before he left. Contact me if there is anything at all. |
