I forget who said in one of the other debate threads that Starbucks has skeletons...

Anyways in lieu of recent events in California, Mass, MI. What are your views on tipping?

Should the baristas share tips w/ shift supervisors?

Tips in general, do you tip? If so how much? If not why?

Do you have rules when you tip or is it service based?

Who likes Starbucks who disagrees w/ them? Did they ruin your mom and pop shops around your towns?

I know this is a multi-question debate.

i used to work at Dutch Bros coffee back in oregon, it's alot like starbucks. i made good money off tips, so i always tip. we didn't share tips with managers/supervisors though. they get paid alot more and get benefits, not sure if it's the same with starbucks. i think tipping depends on the person, if someone is nice to me and makes me a good drink, i put a dollar in the jar. it's common curteosy.
i feel strongly about this, i can't tell you how many times someone comes into the restraunt where i work and leaves me a small tip...after they complain about the price of food/drinks etc. the point is if you can't afford to go out and eat/drink and tip.. don't go out.

They get paid more for a reason. No, I dont think they should be allowed to share in the tip money.

If you did all the work, you deserve the tip.

Rules on tipping are stupid, IMO. Unless you work at a restaurant where customers are taken care of by multiple people.

I know personally I don't want my tip going to someone who didn't provide the service I was appreciating.

Agreed. I tip on occasions that I have cash. But I go to starbucks everyday here. They know me, my drink, Ethans drink etc and have it ready to go before I even reach the register. They also go out of their way to make Ethans drinks special like just strawberry milk or a tiny strawberry frap etc.

I still think the baristas should get something if people tip.

I don't know because I am not sure what the supervisors really do KWIM?

Yes I try to tip, usually a buck, but when I don't it's because of long wait, sucky service etc.

Tipping is service based for me.

I like Starbucks but prefer the mom and pop chain her over them. I go in the morning and the girl already has my coffee ready because she sees me coming in. I like the personal service and not being just another number type thing.

To me, if you did all the work you shouldn't have to share your tip with anyone. That would be like me getting a tip for a color and having to split it with the salon manager. Oh hell no.

I don't think I have ever tipped at starbucks.. I usually pay with my debt card, but still it is their job to make the coffee.. they don't bring me my coffee, they call my name and I walk up and get it. I do tip at least 15% at restaurants tho

Hate starbucks. Their beans are burnt, and even the frappuccino can't cover up that roasting flaw. Ew.
Some people like their coffeee that way, but I'd bet most would prefer a bean that was roasted properly if they had the opportunity to try it.

They drove out some of the best coffee shops all over the country, and their product just isn't good enough to warrant that. :no

If I went there, I'd tip. I tip everyone in the service industry, unless there is a sign that says "please, no tips."

I don't tip at Starbucks. I don't see how it's any different than ordering at a fast food resteraunt, or even like Panera or Atlanta Bread Company, and I don't tip at those places. I pick up my food myself, I clean up my own table, why do they need a tip?

But if someone chooses to tip at Starbucks, it shouldn't be split with the managers. Servers in resteraunts don't share tips with their managers, even tho managers are essentially glorified wait staff. They do everything, help in the kitchen, seat customers, serve drinks, bring food, clear tables, but they don't get a share in the tips. They get a higher wage.

I should answer my own thread.

I do not drink coffee I drink tea, so I never knew starbucks had burnt beans.

I always tip whether I order food to go and stand there and wait at the resturant.

E.g. I was at a Korean store yesterday and they have places to eat there, and I was picking up lunch for people. This lady in front of my gave them EXACT change for her food... I order like a 15 dollar meal and tipped them extra b/c people do not tip.
I do not get it. IF I worked in food I would want people to tip me.

And when I revisit places that I tip well at I always get good service... it makes sense in my mind.

I think w/ Starbucks that the tips should be shared. The Supervisors work harder than most baristas, and deserve something extra for their hard work. It is not a huge difference in what the supervisors make over what the baristas make.

I believe in tipping... Unless a sign clearly states they do not accept tips.

Ditto to this entire post. Growing up in the PacNW and working as a barista, I learned what good coffee is! Sadly, Starbucks and Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf are the only choices down here (and I prefer CBTL but there aren't as many), so I make do... you get used to the flavor I guess.

I always tip $1 a drink, unless I get complete shit service or coffee.

I should also add another reason I don't go to starbucks...their "baristas" know nothing about coffee. I'm sure there are exceptions, but generally. The coffee drinks are made with premeasured amounts and everything, down to the mixers, are marked with "fill lines" for each drink. Different colored measuring cups for each ingredient. It's factory made coffee. :lol

What are your views on tipping? If the service is good I leave a good tip. I have never tipped at Starbucks though because I pay with debit and you don't get a receipt to sign unless it's over a certain amount

Should the baristas share tips w/ shift supervisors? Only if the shift supervisor is acting as a barista that day, if not then no

Tips in general, do you tip? If so how much? If not why? In general I always tip. I tip 15%..a little more if service is above and beyond and little less if there is a lack of service

Do you have rules when you tip or is it service based? Service based

Who likes Starbucks who disagrees w/ them? I like Starbucks

Did they ruin your mom and pop shops around your towns? No. The mom and pop places that were in the area I am from were out of business before Starbucks got there. Any mom and pop places that are left in that my area run themselves out by high priced items.

I stopped going to the mom and pop place that was down the street from my sisters in Richmond because we paid a good $2 sometimes $3 more than Starbucks for less tasty drinks and smaller cups.

I used to work @ Starbucks, and the "managers" there aren't what they are built up to be by the story. The real managers don't get tips. The shift supervisors are just regular baristas that work on the floor like everyone else. Everyone working on the floor splits the tips, so yes I believe that the supervisors should get them. They don't get paid much more than anyone else working and they deserve a share of the tips that they earned.

My view on tipping at Starbucks is generally that we don't expect tips. But if you are a PITA or a jerk and get all creepy specific about your drink and don't tip we will give you decaf when you come back :D All you have to do at Starbucks is BE NICE and they will be fine if you don't tip. If you act like an a-hole then they will jack you every time.

shift supervisors do everything that baristas do-
make drinks, ring up customers, clean the store.. in addition to counting the safe, running the shift, it's tough work!! i worked in starbucks for a while and i honestly think that shift supervisors SHOULD share tips. they don't make much more than baristas and do tonsss of work.

as for tipping at starbucks- i always tip when i receive good service. i feel at starbucks or ANY coffeeshop if you feel your barista went above and beyond to make your day better, leave em a tip!

Link to the thread over this? I was asking in lieu of RECENT events... I did not see one in the debates was it in the news section.

Thanks for clearingup what the shift supervisors do for Starbucks ladies... like you said the story was not clear on their roles.

I totally agree with you! I have a few Starbucks near my house and still drive out of the way to get coffee if I am not making it in my own kitchen. The mom and pop I frequent will make me their 'seasonal specialty' anytime of year because they know it is my favorite and I keep coming back because they take good care of me. Try getting that at Starbucks...you can't!

I tip Cindy pretty well for my sugar cookie latte! Whether I am getting my coffee to stay or to go there is always a pretty picture in it that someone took the time to make (sure it takes an extra minute but it makes me smile!).

The few times I do stop at Starbucks (because that is the only option in the area I am in) I don't tip. It is no different than going to McDonald's and getting a chicken sandwich and fries. I don't tip there why would I tip a fast food coffee barista...'so called gourmet' or not! But thats just the opinion of someone who has watched some really good coffee bars get pushed out because of Starbucks fame and notoriety.

I forget who said in one of the other debate threads that Starbucks has skeletons...

Anyways in lieu of recent events in California, Mass, MI. What are your views on tipping? If you want to, fine. If you don't, no one is going to notice or care unless they're particularly petty.

Should the baristas share tips w/ shift supervisors? No, I was a manager at a cafe and although I could have taken part of my employees' tips, I felt I made more than enough per hour and didn't have to deal with the customers as much so I forfeited that money.

Tips in general, do you tip? If so how much? If not why? 10% or more, but I don't tip at coffee places. USUALLY.

Do you have rules when you tip or is it service based? Generousity Based. If I feel like giving away money, they get a good tip. If not, it's 10%. We usually tip 15%. I don't tip at Starbucks or other coffee houses though, all they're doing is mixing me a drink not anything labor intensive or time-consuming like waitressing.

Who likes Starbucks who disagrees w/ them? Did they ruin your mom and pop shops around your towns? They brought more business to the mom and pop shops in our towns, in fact that is a well known side effect of having a Starbucks move in nearby. Most shops are grateful to have one near because it actually increases your customer base. (I used to manage a mom and pop in CA)

I know this is a multi-question debate.Yep. :D
