in one of my classes today there was a debate about, how they think society is going to take a major shift when our children become adults.

part of the class claimed that the ultra conservatives/ religious people were going to take over , while the other part said that the youth today are more flexible and tolerant and completely disagreed saying that they would take over.

what are your views on this?

Well, looking at societal trends in history, uber religious societies have a tendency to self destruct. Most of the first world industrialized countries that are peaceful right now are more liberal and less religious. You never know though, the world could shift any direction really.

I think all sides need to just chill out. You have the uber over liberals that shove their ideas down your throat just like the conservatives. You need to have a good balance. Saying that, I am a Christian but I don't want to shove my ideas down someone's throat. Just like I don't want to hear about someone that says "organized religion is bad." Blah blah blah blah blah.

I don't think either one will 'take over;' the world runs because of balance. Of course this isn't as simple as the two extremes and only the two extremes; there's a LOT of gray area between the two. But if we simplify it to just the extremes, once one side got too strong, more people would gravitate toward the other side, and it would begin to balance out.

Aha, I think this is right on. And I already see this happening. :tu

i think both

schools sometimes teach tolerance to an extreme
to the point were people are afraid to offend anyone
we become to conservative in our approaches always trying to remain politically correct
we create a lot of animosity and fear
my high school never had any major racial/religous/sexual conflicts
until a "Unity Program" was put in place to bring about tolerance
this program ended up pointing out the difference between people and dividing us to the point were there was a huge riot over students carrying American and Mexican
flags

so idk...

personally i wish people would chill out
and stop taking everything so seriously
liberal and conservatives need to relax

anyone ever listen to the Avenue Q song "everyone's a little bit racist"
you should ;)

I can agree with that.. If a person is willing to give up personal rights/freedoms and allow the government to take control over their lives for the greater good of society, then yea... There will be peace if everyone will trust the government to tell them what is best.

I do not think that there is going to be an actual take over, but I do think that there is going to be a shift in the balance even if it is only temporary. I do not think that it is going to be permanent because history has shown us vast changes over the years where the balance has shifted back and forth. I was just curious on what everyone else thought not necessarily that they were going to take over ( that was just how they put it), but I do think that there is going to be a shift.

I would hope neither of these groups would ever take over. Both ends are too extreme!

So very true. Letting the government legislate "morality", invade your privacy, conduct trials without juries or public accountability, tell you who you can enter into contracts with even if both parties are law abiding adults, and convince you that giving your tax money to corporations is in your best interest is pretty dangerous!

:giggle You know I gotta give you a hard time Lindsay. :D

I think it'll come to a dividing line between ultra-conservatives and ultra-liberals with everyone in the middle who just wanna live their own lives being caught in the struggle. It's scary sometimes to see things somewhat trending toward a "The Handmaid's Tale" type of future.
