View Full Version : Would you send your child...
Jennygirl 04-03-2008, 03:54 PM To a school where they would be one of the only people of their race?
Here is why I mentioned this. My husband and I will be sending DS to a private pre k-all the way through. On a list for the county it lists the races of their students, which I do not think is right in the first place.
Do you think that by listing these stats on a site it makes people not want to go to a certain school?
My son is biracial so it wont make a difference for us. He will be raised that he is both, and we wont allow him to be peigon holed.
Donna 04-03-2008, 03:57 PM I did it last year in New Orleans. Savannah was the ONLY "white" kid in her class and Gabe was 1 of 2 in his class. They had NO issues with it AT ALL. None of the kids teased them, nothing.
I didnt have problems with it. But I would have made HUGE waves had teasing and what not been an issue.
Jennygirl 04-03-2008, 04:00 PM I just cant believe they list their ethnicities on the site...Down to the percentages of what one race makes up.
Brandi 04-03-2008, 04:00 PM If they were the ONLY person of their race, maybe. I dunno though for sure. I guess it would depend on the area. :dunno I think less than 20% of the school here is white, so he'll be in the minority when he starts kindergarten, but he won't be the ONLY white person. A lot would have to do with the area though and the type of people in the area, whether teasing will be a big issue, etc..

It all depends on the testing scores of the school. I want my kids in a school (district) that scores well on the standard testing and had quality teachers... I never considered the race of the children attending the schools... I moved into the school district we are in because of the school district's high marks.

Yep, all schools do that I think, or at least the districts do.
Jennygirl 04-03-2008, 04:04 PM If we cared about that stuff, where would we send DS cause none of the schools have a percent of African Americans, but yet he is also white.
I just want him to get a good education, but I have never seen these kinds of stats before though, I am so sheltered!

:yes
I am all about diversity, but it would depend on a number of factors beyond just race.... for example, would I send my Caucasian, upper middle class child to public school in Harlem, probably not... unless it happened to be a magnet school for something.
I went to a HS that was majority black and Hispanic. There was a special gifted program in the HS (which I was in) and within that context, even though the majority of the school was "ethnic" I only had like 3 black kids in my gifted classes... and there were only about 6 black kids in the entire program....
Shannon* 04-03-2008, 04:25 PM Ideally I'd want my kids to go to a school that's equally diverse. Was the school showing its diversity or showing its lack of diversity by presenting that data? Because diversity sounds like it would be a big selling point for a private school.
MIKOSWIFEY 04-03-2008, 05:05 PM I would definitely send my kids until there was an issue. Who knows: there might never even be an issue with that at all. :)
=Mrs.AiNokeA= 04-03-2008, 05:11 PM If it's a good school and they don't have problems I don't see why not. My DH and I are both mixed so our child will of course be mixed as well. I doubt our child will have exactly the same races as another child. (Me - Portuguese, Irish, Scottish, Dutch, German, English, Cherokee Indian DH - Japanese, Hawaiian, Portuguese and I think some Chinese)

I don't see why a persons race should be involved as far as education. It can't be used against them though because that would be discrimination.
CocoaGoddess 04-03-2008, 06:54 PM The only child? No. Absolutely not, unless we had no other choice.
proudnvywife01 04-03-2008, 06:59 PM DS is half hispanic and white. He is one of the very few white kids at his school. The school is mostly Hispanics. I didn't really have a problem with it until they started picking on him. Part of that I think is the school system and the background of the kids doing the bullying. I'm still deciding on whether I should change schools or not.
andreacc 04-03-2008, 07:03 PM I don't think id have a problem with it unless our child comes home every day miserable.

I'm not sure if you meant that to be funny, but when I read that I laughed out loud! you're absolutely correct, I agree that your child will probably be the only one with that mixture of races and ethnicities.
"Mixed" seems so bland, so much less descriptive than what you wrote.... ;-)
Victoria 04-03-2008, 07:14 PM I just cant believe they list their ethnicities on the site...Down to the percentages of what one race makes up.
I've seen college websites like that!!!!!
I wouldn't mind sending Ethan to an ALL-Black college. Heck....I wouldn't mind attending an ALL Black college myself. :)
It's all about education, IMO! I really don't think kids get teased because of their race as much as some people may think. I don't remember EVER getting teased(to where my feelings got hurt) because of being multi-racial. :)
MelissaMc424 04-03-2008, 07:23 PM Yep, all schools do that I think, or at least the districts do.
:yes from what I've seen most of them do it now. The Chula Vista School district does.. What makes the biggest issue to me more than race is student to teacher ratio, and the quality of education my daughter will get at a school. Standardized tests aren't a good indicator of that.

:yes
I really don't think the breakdown is any different than city race populations on http://www.city-data.com :shrug
mrskmw 04-03-2008, 07:29 PM My oldest is one of only 3 white children in her class. For the most part it isn't a problem at all except for with one child who's parents have taught her to hate white people. Kinda screws up everything I have taught her at home when she comes home and says "why does she hate me because of the color of my skin". That's a whole different rant though. I guess some people care about the precentages so it's good for them to see but to me it doesn't matter unless there are issues. I'm more worried about the quality of education.
Aunt Sponge 04-03-2008, 07:42 PM Yeah - we don't have a choice, though.
Our older two are native american and our oldest actually looks it.
Wicked 04-03-2008, 09:49 PM When/If I have kids:
Barring any issues like teasing... If it was a good school, absolutely. I would prefer a diverse school instead of one that was a vast majority of only one race (whether they were part of the minority OR the majority) just because the real world is diverse and exposure to diversity when they are young is important to me, but race doesn't matter to me NEARLY as much as the quality of the education.
Of course, if my child was teased, it wouldn't matter who was doing it or why, I would want to fix that problem ASAP.
~Christina~ 04-03-2008, 10:01 PM I wouldn't have an issue about it..unless there was teasing or bullying going on...
but ideally i'd like her to go to school where there is a mix of all types of ethnicities from the are....because like wicked said that's how society is and i'd want her to experience it from a young age...
WifeyofASouljah 04-03-2008, 10:05 PM I just cant believe they list their ethnicities on the site...Down to the percentages of what one race makes up.
me too.. that is just not right to me.
Chevy_Gurl 04-04-2008, 11:25 AM Regular schools list their stats. So it makes no difference to me where my kids go. They are biracial as well
RunAwayLove 04-04-2008, 11:31 AM i dont think it matters its kind of odd for them to list stats i dont think its neccessary in kindergarten -2nd grade i was the only caucasian in my class my parents were ok with it but the teacher had me ( a 5 year old mind you) read to the english speaking children while she worked with the 2nd language learners...i doubt anythingn like this would be allowed anymore but seriously thats ridiculous? (i think its where i got my love for attention and teaching lol) at one point (please no one take offense to this i was 5) my mom told me i wanted to dye my hair black and change my name...:S i think it was an interesting lesson for me as a child because my family is not always accepting when it comes to race and i dont have a problem with it :dunno
Jennygirl 04-04-2008, 11:35 AM DH had a question for me, did they have a mixed catagory and they didnt.
Victoria 04-04-2008, 12:22 PM DH had a question for me, did they have a mixed catagory and they didnt.
I know growing up, there weren't mixed categories, so my mom always chose Black, in favor of my Dad...LOL!!! Even now, if I don't see a mixed or other category, I'll choose Black.
RonniesWifeJen 04-04-2008, 12:31 PM yes, I would be histent to send my child to a school where she is the only white kid. I would have to weigh everything though. Most important is her education. But there are many factors that would come into play. We would make the choice as a family. I can understand how isolated one would feel if they were the only student of their race. Most likely, my DD will be the only red head in her classes. I would be concerned about harrassment. I don't want anything to conflict with her ability to be the best student she can be but I also understand that it's unrealistic as a practic. I know people see race even though we try to act as though we don't but it's how we respond to it that matters. I hope to teach my child understanding. I hope to teach her that we are all people and that our individual actions are what count.
Green~Mammy 04-04-2008, 05:00 PM I honestly have never looked at the integration percentages for my kiddos school. I just don't care if he is a majority or a minority as far as race is concerned. I look to see what the teachers are like and what sort of educational benefit they can offer my child. That is all that matters to me.
