I did this with my students in school- we didn't have time to make a real good soup (bell is only 50 minutes long), so we found this one that starts from canned items. It's almost as thick as a stew, so if you like your soup thinner, add more water:

1 package dry vegetable soup mix (Knorr was best)
4 cups water
1 can whole kernel corn
1 can black beans
1 can diced Italian-seasoned tomatoes
1 medium bag frozen mixed vegetables
1 lb turkey sausage, cut into 1/2-inch chunks

Put the water and dry soup mix in a large pot, heat on medium until boiling. Once it looks like everything from the dry mix has rehydrated, dump in everything else and heat until everything is heated through. Serve with nice French or italian bread.
