I know it's important to have one of these while he's away. Where and how does DH go about getting one? Is it something that must be done on post? Also, does it cost anything to get one? Will a general POA allow me to pay his bills, work the bank, etc.? About how long does it take to get one, in other words is it a long process? Sorry I have so many questions but thanks for any answers! :D

POA's are free of charge and available at the legal office on base. General POA should allow you to do everything, but I'd ask for a "special" just incase.. especially if there are Credit card accounts, or if you guys are buying/selling a home.

The POA takes only a few minutes to fill out, and in most cases are done at the same time as wills for those who are deploying. He probably will need to know your address, full name and possibly SSN.

POAs are free:

Special POA: If there's something you ONLY want so and so to do. EG: credit issues. If you have a credit issue, you put on the POA: "This credit issue and nothing more."

General POA: This one has alot more freedom with it--only give it to someone you trust. There is literally nothing a person can't do with this. They can take this to a dealership and say Hey, this person wants me to buy a car for her. As long as that little paper says This person can act on my behalf, there's nothing you can do about it.

You don't even need JAG or a lawyer. You can go online & get a template.... saying what you need POA for (buying a house, banking, etc) - then get it notarized. FYI- all O-3s & up are notaries.

He just needs to head to his legal department and they will put it together. I caution waiting til the last minute though, DH had to send mine through the mail when he left, we got here too close to the departure date and they were backed up several hundred POA's.
