After DH gets back from his first deployment (:( :cry :() he is putting in for a job at both Creech AFB and a job at Nellis...he said he is pretty sure he will get one. I am kind of hoping so because Shaw AFB is the first base we been at and I still want to see more things. So, is there anyone in the area? Where are good places to look for houses at? Any info?!?! Thanks ya'll! :D

We really didn't like Nellis....there is a lot of crime around the base. But, if vegas is your style great :) For familes, not so much IMO

Ummm....the base is pretty nice. Housing...ugh just depends on what they have at the time to offer you. We bought a house off base...and love it. The area...ummm it's ok. For kids it has a really really good private school (if you're into that) The mall is nothing to scream over. But Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Savannah, GA and Charlotte, NC are all within 2 hours of Shaw. Columbia the capital is about 30-45 mins away. And it has some really neat things to do. All in all it's been pretty good. Not amazing...but ok. We just go out of town. ha ha.

I have never been to Vegas. DH has been for TDY's but not lived there. I have heard the area around Nellis is bad. One of my good friends lives there and she said crime in some parts is horrible. So I hope if we get it we can find a nice/safe place to live. We don't have any kids....yet...so.....

We just moved from Vegas and I would say do not live near Nellis. It's kinda yucky and has a lot of crime. We lived in Henderson, it's a little ways from the base but it's a nice area. It's close to the strip for visitors, I would suggest looking there.

DH has been to Nellis for a couple TDY's and didn't like it very much. He said he was ready to leave after 1 week there. But that was just his experience, I've never been there so I couldn't say. Good luck hun and I hope you two get what you want!!

My parent's townhouse is several miles away from Nellis. Nellis is about 10 miles or so from the strip. Directly around the base isn't so great, just like how it is here in Norfolk. When you venture out, you'll notice nicer areas. :)

I agree with most...area around the base is ugly. Definitely not what comes to mind when you think about Las Vegas. It has its ups and downs I guess, but since you don't have kids yet, you'll probably be able to enjoy it more. We live on base and it's not too bad. They are currently building newer 2 story homes that they just recently started letting people move into. There are some pretty cool clubs if that's your thing and you can see some cool concerts here too.

PM me anytime you'd like. I've been here for over 20 years. I'll tell you the good and the bad, straight up. But, YMMV.

Just for sure, don't judge the whole town by the Strip and Downtown areas or the ads or shows you see running on tv. It's entirely different, once you stop experiencing the tourist's life. More schools and churches per capita than almost any major city.

But, you will feel that we are an extention, a suburb, of LA. Traffic is horrendous. However, you'll fall in love with the 24 availability of literally everything. I'm spoiled that way.

Agreed, Henderson and Boulder City are great, but so is the West (Summerlin) and Northwest. Just be prepared to live in track housing. Customs and charming homes with personality are rare. Nellis's surrounding area is to be avoided due to gang violence, but that seems to hold true with many bases (crime nearby them, ie: shipyards). On base it's safe though. We are the home of the Thunderbirds (yeah!)

It's a real mixed bag, living here. You get out of it what you put into it overall.

I'm a little late responding, but we're stationed at Nellis and LOVE it! We wanted to live on base but the waiting list was so long, so we live in North Las Vegas, our neighbourhood is really nice and quite. There are a lot of good neighbourhoods around here.
