What is up with the total lack of Air Conditioning in the homes and townhomes out there?

I grew up in California and I remember the summers as being brutal. However, that was the LA area, and we weren't very close to the beach.

Is it really unnecessary in San Diego? My DH is totally against moving into a place without air, but it's getting harder and harder to find units that offer them.

I wish we had A/C, but honestly, it's not a MUST like it is in South Texas where I'm originally from. We only had a few unbearably hot days, and housing is now allowing window unit A/Cs. There's no humidity here at all, and on even the hottest days, it's not bad, as long as there's a breeze.

I have central AC in my apt :D.

BUT I should say, I live in Escondido, and we don't use it that much. And we are inland north county, where it gets the hottest, besides inland east county. I would say overall San Diego is a pretty cool county compared to LA, and especially Inland Empire, which is hell compared to San Diego, LOL

I personally would not choose to go without central AC after living two summers without it. We had a 6 month old and a toddler and I used to go to the mall or just drive around to escape the heat. We did live inland, but not that far, only maybe like 20 miles or so...

Now we live in Oceanside and we can already feel a difference being closer to the water and with the breezes! But I still personally would not CHOOSE to live without it... especially during those heat waves every few weeks! :freakout

Another reason why we decided to rent out in town. :)

We usually have quite a bit of breeze here so it is not too bad. Definetly not as bad as living in Texas where it can get to the 100's. So I just sit in front of a fan and chill! LOL

When we lived in El Cajon which is just east of SD we lived in some townhomes that had central A/C but then we moved into a house and it did not have A/C but it had one lame window unit in the living room and it happened to be in the wall that faced west so it was the hottest place in the house. The A/C unit would freeze up in no time. However, there is not much humidity and it cooled way down at night so I had window fans and it made it comfortable to sleep at night. But if we end up moving back to San Diego, I will hunt down a house with central A/C or deal with those damn townhomes because they had A/C... I just got sick of single guys renting townhomes in our complex and then doing nothing but party.

I grew up at the beach and we NEVER had air conditioning (Newport Beach CA) and never needed it. We just always had the ceiling fans and all the windows open...nice ocean breeze :D BUT! If you go inland its a must! We lived in Escondido last summer and I almost died :lol
