Police Ask Public For Information About Slayings On Northwestside
POSTED: 1:41 pm EST December 19, 2005
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- After two homicides within two miles of each other early Monday morning, Jacksonville Sheriff's Office held a news conference asking that anyone with information on either case to come forward.
At about 12:35 a.m. a 35-year-old man was fatally shot and a woman was wounded, in what appeared to be a robbery at the intersection of 17th and Grunthal streets.
The woman told police there were two or three armed, masked men. She was taken to Shands Hospital and is expected to recover.
Lt. Tom Hackney said just 35 minutes later 11-year-old Damian Hughes was shot and killed near the intersection of 26th and Spring Grove streets.
Hackney said Hughes was riding in the car with his 16-year-old sister, when her car was approached from behind in what the police believe was a carjacking attempt.
"The 16-year-old drove west on 26th Street. Last night the roads were wet and slick, and she lost control of the car and it flipped, ejecting Damien Hughes from the vehicle," Hackney said.
JSO is investigating both of the cases as homicides.
"We're still actively looking to see if the two cases are related or not. The distance where they occurred is close together, and we are asking the public to come forward with any information they may have," Hackney said.
If you have any information on either incident please call the Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit at (904) 630-2172 or (904) 630-0500. Hackney said that anyone with information could remain anonymous by using Crimestoppers.
Full reports on the local station beginning at 5 p.m.
So very sad. So close to Christmas. The 11 year old boy was in 4th grade. Honor roll, into sports.... has such a very familar ring to my baby. I couldnt IMAGINE having my baby taken so close to Christmas. They confirmed that the 11yr old died from the gun shots and not the accident.
I HATE Jacksonville. :yes
