View Full Version : Travel pay vs. travel advance Pebbles 04-25-2008, 03:10 PM Is there a difference between the two? :help Donna 04-25-2008, 03:26 PM i dont think so. i think the only difference is one you get before (advance) and the other you get after (reimbursed). I could be wrong though. But that is how I always understood it. AmandaR 04-25-2008, 08:47 PM Yes, but the difference is in the obvious. A travel advance is an advance on the travel pay you are expecting. You are typically only given an advance on a percent (80% I believe) of what the total travel pay is expected to be. I am guessing the travel pay is just something they give for a PCS? Thanks! CocoaGoddess 04-25-2008, 11:35 PM Dh refuses to take a travel advance because he has heard too many horror stories. Pebbles 04-25-2008, 11:40 PM Are you asking about travel pay ie traveling to your destination by car, or dislocation allowance? There's a difference. Now I'm confused. I'll ask my husband when he wakes up and get back to you. gunsgirl 04-28-2008, 10:50 AM you should go ahead and get the advance travel payment: you need to specify this way: you want 80% of the per diem and Malt based on authorised travel days and mileage. you want 100% of the DLA: at least 1800 dollars now a few things that get peeps in trouble: 1) you cannot double dip allowances: if you are authorised 7 days travel and only take 5 days and then check into a hotel for TLE you will lose or have to pay back the 2 days of per diem. 2) do not stay at 5 star hotels: remember the perdiem is to cover food, lodging and incedentals enroute to the new PDS. if you over spend it comes out of you pocket.. 3) do not eat 3 meals aday in fancy hotels-- same reason above. 4) do a partial dity this is a reimbursement of weight at about 65 cents per lb. and will come in handy at the end. 5) save all gas, tolls and oil change reciepts since they will help when doing the reimbursement for the partial dity. we have always made money on a PCS... just do it with knowledge and you will be ok. luvmysailor96 05-01-2008, 11:25 AM What do you mean when you say do a partial ditty move? Bryanna 05-01-2008, 11:28 AM Are you asking about travel pay ie traveling to your destination by car, or dislocation allowance? There's a difference. wait.. what is a dislocation allowance?? is that seperate from the pay you get to travel? I just moved.. and im STILL confused!! Donna 05-01-2008, 11:37 AM DLA is "free" moving money. There is a link in this forum up at the top that has DLA rates on it. http://militarysos.com/forum/showthread.php?t=130089 Bryanna 05-01-2008, 11:55 AM DLA is "free" moving money. AND it was random.... all we figured out was that it was for travel... except that it was more than we thought we would be reimbursed for.... it was about twice the DLA... did we get more than we were supposed to? or are we supposed to get reimbursed AND DLA? omg i feel like such a loser newbie at all this!! Have your DH go to finance and have them figure it out. Better to owe now and KNOW about it than 6-12 months from now not getting a paycheck with no warning. Thanks Donna-that's is what he will be getting. I've heard that taking a travel advance is a bad move because finance tends to mess up the repayments. Donna 05-01-2008, 12:09 PM I got it now. Thanks Donna-that's is what he will be getting. I've heard that taking a travel advance is a bad move. we have ALWAYS taken advance travel and never had a problem. But I am a stickler for receipts and what not. Pebbles 05-01-2008, 12:11 PM we have ALWAYS taken advance travel and never had a problem. But I am a stickler for receipts and what not. I'll bet that the people I've talked to were just clueless :hehe Bryanna 05-01-2008, 12:16 PM my thoughts, if you feel like you guys got more than you were supposed to. DH thinks its fine.... and i simply don't know what to expect. all the different names for everything... all the rules... I knew we would be getting reimbursed... I had that all figured out.... and DH DID say something about 'being paid simply to move' or something... so im trying to figure out if we DO get reimbursed AND get extra pay for moving.... i'm really lost.... HE thinks its right... but i'm worried it might not be.... gunsgirl 05-02-2008, 08:08 AM Byanna: the easiest way to figure it out: take the total you guys got and subtract each allowance: per diem 109 a day for him,,, 81.75 a day for you x the number of authorised travel days. then subtract the MALT: 19 cents a mile for each mile of authorised travel miles. subtract the DLA you are authorised: what is left? did you do a partial or FULL dity move? did you count the BAH you got enroute? did you use TLE? you can PM me and I can help you walk thru it if you need me to. HTH's gunsgirl 05-02-2008, 08:12 AM i think a misconception is the travel PAY and advance PAY: travel pay is everything I posted earlier advance PAY: is advance BAH or advance BASE pay : theses ARE the only things you need to set up repayment with. For most branches that have finally come to the conclusion it is easier to do the paperwork first instead of after. all branches will now allow the travel money to be paid in advance a percentage but still a very good part of it.
