View Full Version : Moving time frame
thekels9 04-25-2008, 10:23 PM What time frame experiences have you had with moving?
We just found out about 3 weeks ago where DH is going instead of where he was originally supposed to be going. We are only moving 6 hours away from where I am currently. I plan to be out of my apartment by May 31st, and living with him by June 7th. He will find out hopefully in the next week about movers....I'm honestly thinking it would possibly be easier to just move there ourselves.
And if the Army does move us, will they have to come and do the initial inspection of our belongings?
CocoaGoddess 04-25-2008, 11:31 PM How much stuff do you have? Like, a really big house full of stuff, or a smaller apartment? If you don't have a whole lot of furniture, it might be easier for you to move yourself.
It's totally possible for the military to set you up in a move now though--although housing told us that May is the busiest time of the year, for whatever reason. Still, not hopeless.
Back in 2004, my DH was accepted to his school, and had a little less than 3 weeks to report to duty. We had our move date the next week, and we moved from California to Maryland *exactly* 3 weeks after he got his acceptance letter, so it's definitely possible.
CocoaGoddess 04-25-2008, 11:33 PM By the way, when we moved, the military didn't come to inspect our stuff.
The moving company packs up everything, and notes any type of damage or marks on the furniture. It's advisable for you to take pictures. If the stuff comes back with more damage, then they're held accountable.
Fidzy 04-25-2008, 11:36 PM We moved ourselves to Bragg and the military wasn't involved whatsoever. We just packed up, showed up and got an apartment.
BLBnJVB3 04-25-2008, 11:52 PM The last time we moved John arranged for the packers and movers to come 2-3 weeks out. They set aside 2 days for packing but were able to do it all in 1 day and then 1 day for moving. They didn't inspect any of our stuff. We were packed up Oct. 31, moved out Nov. 1, and had our stuff at the new place Nov. 7. The movers even offered to help us put our beds together and moved the stuff to the general area in the specific room we wanted. They were great. We moved from FL. to IL. and we had a 4yr. old and 6 week old so we weren't trying to move ourselves.
Good Luck.
thekels9 04-26-2008, 10:50 AM Okay.....I'm thinking it would really just be better to move ourselves. I live in a town house apartment currently. We are going to be getting new living room furniture when we get there, as well as a bedroom set. Therefore, the biggest thing we'd be taking really is our kitchen table and DH's TV. And since we are just 6 hours away....I think it would definitely be manageable. What do you girls think?
thekels9 04-26-2008, 10:59 AM Okay, I looked on the uhaul website, and to move, without buying any of their boxes or anything would cost $184.00 for three days of use.
footstepswife 04-26-2008, 11:04 AM It depends on how much time dh will have to help you or what not, plus. I would look around your house and see what you have for sure. It is about 1000 pounds per room.
We have learned from many people over the years, so times it is easier to let them do it. Plus if they break you get money from that, if you break it is yours to replace.
But you also said you don't have any real furniture, so that might be easier for you to do it.
O, and always look bigger for uhaul then small, when we moved two street up, it was awful because we didn't buy a big enough truck and had to make three trips.
ETA:::: little stuff adds up, espicially clothes and little tinkets.
thekels9 04-26-2008, 11:35 AM Okay, I think we've decided to just move ourselves. Without any major furniture to be taking ourselves, I think this would be the best way. Plus, my parents live here currently, and we have a very large storage building that they own in case we can't make it all in one trip, or don't want to take those little trinkets with us. I just took everything off of my walls, and boy, does it feel good!
