Do you want ocean? Or just the sand and a bit of water?

There is sandy point right by the bay bridge.

Or, Ocean City that is 2 hours away.

Hey Jess...the map on this site looks like you have to go across the bay to get to the beaches
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/travel/beachguide.htm

Not a 100% sure that is the actual case....here is another site that lists MD beaches though, maybe that will help :D

that is obviously the case for real beaches, like at the ocean.

I love Rehoboth, it'd be a bit of a drive for you, it is in Delaware, but it is really family-y there, I think.

Ocean City is not bad, there is a boardwalk and what not. BUt you are coming up on Senior week season where every high school in the state's seniors spend a week there, it spans across the end of May and all of June.

If you just want to hang out in the sand/water. Sandy Point is right by the bridge, it is also really easy to get to. I do think you have to pay to get in because it is a State Park, I have never been there for the beach, the bay grosses me out to be totally honest.

Its a little bit of a drive but there's Assateague
http://www.nps.gov/asis/

About 45 min south of you theres Chesapeake Beach - small, small beach with not much to do in the area

OC might be your best bet if you're looking for some entertainment along with your beach. I would go before mid May as the PP said, theres Sr Week & that's a huge thing around there!

I looked and fount Sany point beach state park. But it says you have to pay 5 bucks a person to get in :shock it doesn't say if military gets a discount and I don't really feel like dropping 20 bucks to go to the beach when gas is high enough. We just wanted something close by for the kids. Sand and some water to play in. Doesn't have to be anything special but clean would be nice

For a beautiful unspoiled beach I recommend Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge (right over the VA border on the Delmarva peninsula). They even have wild ponies running free on the preserve.

Personally I can't stand boardwalks, boomboxes and amusement park rides at the beach. I'm headed to Rehoboth Beach for a conference in June and I'm really really hoping it's not too honky-tonk.

Chincoteague is great! If you go down that far, you should go all the way to Va Beach- its a beautiful drive, I think the beach is 1 1/2 hours or so from there. :thinking

Rehoboth had a reputation of a gay - nude beach when I was growing up. I don't know if it was true, it's just what all the kids in my school were saying. I think theres Bethany Beach too. another good driving trip would be Cape May- you take a ferry from DE to NJ. its pretty :)

OP- I know you said close by,, but now you have many options for side trips :)

Rehoboth does attract a HUGE gay population, but I have not seen anyone nude :shock

I just love a pizza place that is there, and the outlets :giggle

A lot of people love Bethany, or Fenwick area.

There are lots of beaches around

FYI Sandy Point has a somewhat rocky beach. If you go there, make sure to wear water shoes.
If you want to head north to Baltimore, check out the Hammerman area of Gunpowder State Park. It has a very nice sand beach and, since it's on the river, not much in the way of waves. And the water is fairly shallow, too. It's great for smaller kids. And they have a watersports facility there where you can take sailing, windsurfing, and kayaking lessons. http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/central/gunpowder.html

Oh, and I heart Ocean City, but for an adult weekend. Helloooooooo Seacrets. :D

Sandy Point is not exactly clean. But Chincoteague is awesome and it has the wild ponies. And Ocean City is just down from there so you can do the beach at Chin and then the board walk at OC.
