And it's proving to be hard.

I know I want a small breed of dog who's going to STAY small. I'd prefer a puppy so we could bond from the very beginning and he could be MY baby. (OH by the way I'm looking for a male puppy.) I like breeds with pointy ears and snouts but I'm not overly obsessive about that. I just really want a healthy, small-breed male puppy. I didn't think it would be THAT hard to find in an area this size.

Apparently it is. I'm having a VERY hard time finding reputable breeders. Then again maybe it's just my bad luck. (Oh by the way, a German Shepard/Black Lab mix is NOT a small breed dog. I thought that was common knowledge but I guess the lady I spoke with today missed that boat.) The shelters in the area seem to have lots of LARGE breed dogs or they're adults. :(

If I found the right dog, I *might* bend on the age, but I CAN NOT get a large dog.

I'm in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. Can anyone help me out? Does anyone know anyone that breeds dogs? Or a private shelter?

Again I'm looking for a healthy, small-breed male puppy. I'm talking like fit in a handbag small when adult sized. And I'd prefer a puppy that's not completely pure bred as I've heard that pure breds can be prone to serious health problems due to inbreeding.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

Also, I go to school online and work from home now. In other words I have nothing to do and am willing to drive to get to my new puppy.

My little girl is 11lbs and full grown...I actually found her on Craigslist. CKC registered and evrything, her mama just couldn't keep her anymore. You might try looking there...lots of good animals needing homes and new listings every day!

Try google-ing small breed dogs and then looking up the rescue centers for those breeds. Some have puppys that people bought and didn't want anymore and some a mixed. I hope you find what you are looking for. Have you tried Richmond, VA? It is not that far from Hampton Roads.

I would def consider craigslist or other rescue places for specific breeds. what kind of breed are you looking for? Chihuahua , dachshund? long haired short haired, high maintenance or low? if you go to shelters you have to go everyday to find the little dogs they go really fast. I would also recommend maybe getting a slightly older dog ( no need to deal with the puppy stuff if you can avoid it) they will still be your baby, we got Boris just a few months ago and he was 15 months he sleeps with me, sits on my lap all the time follows me around and all that.

A Pomeranian/Poodle mix or something similar is ideal.
