View Full Version : grocery help!! ***
so, as you all know, we just moved... we pretty much got rid of EVERYTHING in our cupboards and fridge to make things easier.
so...
if you had a completely empty kitchen/pantry, what would YOU buy?
we are a family of 4....2 adults, 2 kids (1 who doesn't eat much besides baby food and breastmilk)
MelissaMc424 05-02-2008, 02:22 PM New staple items, (if you didn't pack those).. flour, sugar, tea bags, rice... spices.. Butter, milk, cheese, sandwich stuff for easy meals while unpacking. Paper products, and ziploc bags, foil, plastic wrap.. Some snack stuff, crackers, and stuff like that. I'd restock the freezer with meats and veggies as well.
Don't forget the baking soda for the fridge and freezer. And cleaning products, as well as a new mop/broom.
Berkley 05-02-2008, 02:25 PM Canned food, Peanut butter, tuna fish, the staples mentioned above... Ummmm fruit, bread

This is exactly what I was going to say. Also, don't forget your condiments like ketchup, mustard, mayo, salad dressings, marinades.... (I always forget that stuff)
I also buy easy meals like mac n' cheese and spaghetti when we first move.

I bring an Electric skillet along with us when we PCS, that way I can cook right away.. we had hamburger helper type dinners the first few nights in our new place.. and that saved money on fast food.
I totally forgot the condiments, but that's a big buy in this house too..
Lckychrmzz 05-02-2008, 02:29 PM rice, pastas, soups
brentscrystal 05-02-2008, 02:30 PM Definitely cheese bricks (my kids love cheese), breakfast cereal, trash bags, toilet paper, coffee, veggies (fresh, frozen, or canned), ketchup, mustard, mayo, milk, pb& j, eggs, tortillas (preferably made fresh in the store... I really miss that about living in TX!), hmmmm, I know there's a bunch more but my mind is drawing a blank.

:yes We've already had to do this twice in the past year :whatever
luvmydoc 05-02-2008, 02:46 PM I'm visualizing the Great Lakes commissary in my head. I'd buy:
Veggies - Onions, garlic, potatoes, bell peppers and tomatoes
fresh fruits - bananas, apples, oranges
snacks - cookies, chips, microwave popcorn
breakfast items - oatmeal, cereal, pancake mix, syrup
beverages - soda, drink mix, juice boxes, tea, coffee, creamer
condiments - ketchup, mustard, mayo, salad dressing, bbq sauce, pickles
spices - salt, pepper, garlic salt, soy sauce, olive oil, oregano, chili powder, etc
canned goods (whatever are staples in your household)
bag of sugar and flour (and other baking items you use regularly)
meats (if applicable) - ground beef, chicken breast, pork chops
bread, lunchmeat
Dairy - milk, cheese slices, eggs
Hope this helps :) Good luck! My very first trip to the commissary (just married, first time living apart from mom & dad) took THREE hours only because I had no idea what I needed to get. I think I went through each aisle at the commissary at least 3 or 4 times! It didn't help that DH was TAD at the time and coming home in a few days - I was trying to be the good housewife and have everything ready before he got home LOL.
