Man, Dori scared the crap out of me on Saturday!

In the morning she was being herself, hopping around. Then by like 10am on Saturday, I noticed she wasn't being active at all. She was laying down on the mat in the bathroom and would not budge. I even picked her up without a fuss, and she ALWAYS puts up a fight when I try to pick her up...thats when I knew something was wrong. By 9pm I noticed she had not touched ANY of her food. Not the greens, not the pellets, not the piece of pineapple I gave her....and she is A FANATIC about her pellets and any fruit. Then I looked in her litter box that I Had cleaned that morning, and it there were ZERO poop pellets in there, and it was not even a little wet. Which means she had not pooped, peed, drank or eaten the entire day. And she was acting totally weird, not wanting to come out of her house at all, and not even wanting to move from one spot. So I looked it up...turns out that her symptoms were exactly those of something called GI Stasis. Apparently its really common for bunnies. Bunnies can get hairballs just like cats, but unlike cats they cannot regurgitate the hairballs, so they can get really backed up...And if the condition is not taken care of it can cause death :wowsers:sigh. So I really freaked out and at 9pm I was calling all over San Diego to find an emergency vet that would see rabbits. Unfortunately there are not a lot of emergency vets that do. So finally I found one, and travelled to Mission Valley to get her seen. I finally got to take Dori home around 2am. The vet gave her some shots of fluids and medication to help her bowel movements. When I took her home right away I saw improvement. By Sunday morning I saw the piece of pineapple gone and she was eating some pellets :). I felt such relief. Last night she was acting like Dori again, jumping and running all over the house and hopping on the couch and on top of me when she caught a whiff of my banana I was eating, LOL.

But for those bunny parents out there who don't know about this, please always keep an eye on your buns, especially since they try to hide illness and sometimes can be hard to catch in time :(, I'm just glad I did!
