Hello!

My db is currently in training to head overseas for a year long deployment.:sigh My aunt and uncle were generous enough to give me a web cam today. Do you ladies with deployed SOs know if he will have one too? Do they have them on base? Will he have to purchase his own?

some bases provide them but unfortunately, my hubby's base does not offer these nor do they allow him to use the one we bought him before he deployed. :( you'll just have to wait and see because i'm sure they won't tell you the specifics before then..you know how the military is. lol.

Apparently our FRG sent over a bunch of webcams, but I don't know how it is where your SO is in Iraq.

Grego and I web cam often. He is fortunate to have wireless internet...although it was expensive and a huge hassle for them to get. But at most the main bases he said that they have public computers with web cams available for guys to use!

The good thing about you having a web cam, if he doesn't you can at least video yourself saying messages to him and then send him a cd of them or something? Maybe? :hehe

DB just bought one so he didn't have to worry about waiting in lines or having a time limit. We talked via skype web cams today for over and HOUR..I have had a stupid smile on my face since then.

I bought one for me and my DB before he left. I don't think they have them where he is because he says the other guys are jealous that he gets to see me on webcam. I (L) webcams!

DF has one built in in his laptop so I don't know if they have any available to the other soldiers

at the pb where df is at there were web cams provided but there was only a couple now there is only one for the five computers that they have and it only wants to work part of the time but i turn mine on all the time so he can see me. It really makes his day when he gets to see me and i act like a smiling fool when i actually get to see him!

DHs is built into his laptop as well. He doesnt leave for a few more weeks and Im sure many will be jealous of the fact he can use his whenever. We also just upgraded our phones and DH chose to get the Blackberry from Sprint, which has its own worldwide data plan. He plans to use his phone as a wireless modem....For this 3rd deployment we're gonna have so much more talk/web time than ever before and Im so happy!

i dont know.. i think you will just have to wait and see how things work over there... when DF was deployed he couldnt even get on a computer, and then i see a lot of girls on here that web cam with their boys often (alright alright, i admit, i am EXTREMELY jealous and got a web cam in hopes of DF being able to chat on his second deployment) .. it depends where they are and what theyre doing... but i hope that you guys do get to chat, i bet it makes it easier.

We have our own, but yes the public computers where DH is at supplies them, the connection is always horrible though.

They offer webcams where my DB is but the internet is so slow that it's really tough for us to actually talk via webcam so we've only done it twice. Still, it was good to see his face even if it was all delayed and pixelated.

Either way the talk rates are thru the roof. With the phone as modem we plan to use Yahoo or Skype to do voice thru the laptops, and maybe webcam like once a week. We are saving any talk prices for when I go into labor and I call him...but he will be using the at&t military calling card to call me back. The time is still cut down on them unfortunatly, but we wont have to worry about how much we rack up the cell phone bill.
