ARLINGTON, Wash. -- A former Washington state social worker has been accused of faking brain cancer to avoid work.
Theft charges were filed Tuesday against 40-year-old Sandra Dee Martinez, formerly of Mountlake Terrace, who was employed by the Department of Social and Health Services in Arlington.

According to investigators, Martinez presented fake letters that appeared to be from doctors saying she had malignant brain tumors. Prosecutors wrote that she received $21,000 worth of paid leave and took advantage of sick days donated by co-workers last year.

Randy Hart, a regional administrator for DSHS, said employees decided to donate their sick days because Martinez hadn't been employed long enough to accumulate much leave.

"If this is true, then this will make a lot of people I think feel bad that their generosity was taken advantage of," he said.

Martinez' friends and neighbors also helped out.

"We would pretty much feed her every day because she was too sick to cook, it's what God would have wanted us to do is help somebody if they need help," said Peggy Townsell, who lived next door to Martinez.

But then Townsell found what looked like a doctor's letter on her printer stating that Martinez may only have six months to live.

Prosecutors wrote that Martinez apparently left the letter on the printer after using Townsell's computer.

"If it wouldn't have been printed up on my computer by accident, I would have thought it was for real," Townsell said. "The way she had it typed up, she had the heading from the hospital, she had the doctor's name, the doctor's ID, everything on there."

Townsell called the woman's employer, who referred the case to police.

Arlington Police Chief John Gray said Martinez has moved to another state and won't speak with investigators.

"The state of Washington - the taxpayers - are out their money, and this is unspeakable," Gray said. "We don't have any patience for that so we want to hold this person accountable."

Yeah. We get e-mails all the time telling us that so and so has been approved for shared leave and then if we want to donate some of our sick leave or annual leave to them then we can. I do donate to people and before I do I will often ask around to see what the story is... for example there was recently a request for shared leave for someone who is reserves but put on active duty!!! I DID NOT donate- she's getting paid where she is (not far away, but active duty). When someone is sick though I will often donate. There is another social worker at a different office who does in fact have brain cancer and had surgery and all. She is in rehab now, folks have gone to see her. I gave her 200 hours.
The job this woman was doing is very stressful but, if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Don't lie and cheat and steal from those of us who can and do the job for years and still care enough about our co-workers to give away our hard earned leave. KWIM?

I saw this on Nancy Grace last night and it made me want to throw up...Why would you even do that? She's just asking to get a brain tumor now and if she does no one is going to help her because she's already lied about it once so why wouldn't she do it again....Stupid people.

At this point it doesn't look like it. Some people in the media have made a huge issue out of it- that it comes out of the tax payer's pockets if we get our time back. (Wait- don't we pay taxes- LOTS of them??? Am I, in effect, paying myself?? Weird.:wow)

The thing is though- that if we retire/leave state service with sick time banked then it can only be used towards medical expenses (they will use it to reimburse us for medical stuff we can show them receipts for) or we get $0.25 on the dollar in cash.
