DALLAS - An HIV-positive man convicted of spitting into the eye and mouth of a Dallas police officer has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Because a jury found that Willie Campbell used his saliva as a deadly weapon, the 42-year-old will have to serve half his sentence before becoming eligible for parole. He was sentenced Wednesday.

Campbell was being arrested in May 2006 for public intoxication when he began resisting and kicking inside the patrol car, Dallas police office Dan Waller testified.

Campbell was convicted of harassment of a public servant.

WTF.
Ok - so I agree that he shouldn't have spit on the guy but come on! When you become an officer you're accepting that your possition puts you in contact with crazed, diseased drug users and violent offenders, etc etc.
This type of danger just goes along with the job.

Just like a DR is in frequent contact with contageous diseases and so on and so forth - it's part of the job and you *should* be well aware of the risks when you sign up.

I thought you couldn't get HIV from spit. Like if you kiss someone, you both have to have open sores or a cut in your mouth in order to possible contract it.

WHAT??????????????????? my understanding is you can't get it from saliva. Even if he spit with the intetion of malicious infection. This is the 1st story I've heard where this has happened. THIRTY FIVE YEARS?

Than I saw the state. Texas is part of the US, but Texas is a sense their only little country. I definately think he pissed off the wrong Texan officer.

But then again...if the guy THOUGHT he could give it to the officer via his spit, and INTENDED on that, even though in actuality it wouldn't happen, does that count as using it as a deadly weapon? Like even if it's not a deadly weapon, but then intent behind it was for that purpose?
