Wow - what do you think about this comment? Was it a poorly chosen "joke", politics as usual or something worse?

Huckabee aims gun joke at Obama
Later apologizes for remark about candidate at NRA convention

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Former Republican presidential contender Mike Huckabee, interrupted on Friday by a loud crash as he spoke to the National Rifle Association, joked that the noise was Democratic candidate Barack Obama falling off a chair as he dodged a gun aimed at him.

Huckabee later apologized for the remark.

"That was Barack Obama. He just tripped off a chair. He was getting ready to speak and somebody aimed a gun at him, and he dove for the floor," Huckabee told the NRA convention in Louisville, Kentucky, in comments that aired on CNN.

Democratic front-runner Obama, who if elected in November would be the first black U.S. president, was campaigning in South Dakota on Friday as he tried to wrap up the party's nomination.

The memory of the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King 40 years ago, and the risks Obama could face in his run for the presidency, have been a concern of many voters during this presidential campaign.

At Obama's request the U.S. Secret Service began protecting him in May 2007, 18 months before the general election and the earliest a presidential candidate has received protection.

Huckabee later issued a statement saying he did not intend his "offhand remark" to offend or disparage the Illinois senator. "I apologize that my comments were offensive, that was never my intention," he said.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain also spoke to the influential gun-rights group on Friday as he sought to rally conservatives' support for his candidacy. The Arizona senator had warned that Obama and fellow Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, a New York senator, would threaten gun-owners' right to bear arms if either was elected president.

McCain and Huckabee, a pastor and former Arkansas governor, have avoided answering questions about whether Huckabee could be McCain's vice presidential running mate.

:wow That was so wrong, I can't believe he said it! The guy does like to crack jokes, so I'm honestly not surprised his sense of humor hasn't gotten the best of him before (that I can recall).

Although, I've never heard any concern that he would be assassinated like MLK. Has anyone else heard anyone say something like that?

I don't think this was right or smart of him to say this, but I mean realistically if Barack does get nominated, he runs a very high risk of being assassinated. I know we don't like to think of it, but there A LOT of racist people out there that would do a lot to rid of him, say he gets elected....that's just my kind 2 cents on that though

Which only makes that comment that much more distasteful, imo.

As a former Arkansas resident - lived there for about 7 years total...Huckabee is a douchebag. The comment doesn't suprise me though coming from his big ignorant mouth.

I think it was in very poor taste for him to say that. I know that Obama has received many threats because my dh's good friend works for the secret service and he has had SS protection since sometime last year when he received the first threat. Sad that it's still like that in this time.

My thoughts exactly. The guy has a crude sense of humor in general. Not exactly a plus for a politician, but I doubt he meant anything by it. I'm also surprised this is the first time it's gotten him in trouble that we know of:lol

Perhaps that's funny in Kentucky, but I think it's in bad taste here..

Wow, I am one to admit that I had never thought that Obama would be assassinated if elected. I don't know if that makes me super naive, or what. I guess I just never grew up around tense racial situations and/or blatant racism (former New Hampshire resident here... no surprise).

Maybe I'm like Stephen Colbert and I just don't see color ;)
