I've been to Ireland once before but it was only to Shannon for about 2 days (flight was delayed).

DH and I are in the middle of planning a vacation for August 09'. We will be childless which is a BIG step for me as I've never been away from my baby for more than a few hours and we are going for a week.

We would like to stay at a B&B as I've read they are EVERYWHERE and apparently pretty cheap. I can't seem to talk DH into staying at a hostel as he is freaked out by the movie. lol Any advice from anyone who has been there or lived there??? Places to see? B&B's to stay at? I would really like to visit the a county that is part of the Gaeltacht. Any particular county/town/city to venture to? And although of course we want to stay a few days in Dublin, we would also like to venture out into a few not so touristy areas.

We spent a long weekend in the Dublin area and had a blast! One of the highlights was going to see Newgrange, an ancient astronomical observatory kind of similar to Stonehenge.

OoOo thank you so much. We have been searching online for places to see and have yet to come across Newgrange. I just searched it and we would definetally like to see this. :) Thanks, added it to my list. Glad to hear you had a great time. I hope we do as well.

Cool! The tour we did was called the Mary Gibbons tour and she also brought us to the Hills of Tara (the seat of the ancient kings of Ireland.)

I've heard the B&B's are wonderful and CHEAP there. There was a lady I worked with once that use to go frequently. She had found a super.super.super. B&B she said it was I think $40 a night US dollars. (CHEAP) and it was beautiful and they served good Irish breakfast. She even knew the locals in town.

Go to Dingle, it is on the West Coast, the shoreline is beautiful there. It is like the Ring of Kerry but there are less people. Kilkenny is a cool town too. My mother used to own a travel agency that specalized in Ireland (they just sold it because her and her partner were getting older and they both needed something more stable then the travel business) so if you have questions you can PM me. I have been twice once we had a private coach and we went around to a bunch of places and the second time I went alone and stayed in Dublin. Getting out of Dublin is the way to go though.

BBs in Ireland are like McDonalds here. In fact, there are less McDonalds here than B&Bs there. They are cheap and nice, and comfy and the people who run them are NICE!!! Be warned, they are mostly out of the way. So it's quite a walk to any sites.

I like all the counties. There are mini stone henges all over the place, it's pretty cool. But they dont care, they let the cows eat by them.

I like Dublin, DINGLE! (Dunmore Head), Cork and Limerick. Everything is nice. Food in Dublin is yummy. Dunmore Head is a cool town (most western part in Ireland), the Blarney stone in in Cork, but I didn't see it. I heard it's not worth it (you have to repel down to touch it and we were little, so we didn't go. Don't go if you are afraid of heights!).

I'm so effing jealous.

Ireland is a blast. I lived there for a year so PM if you have any questions. Dublin is great. Lots to see. But it is a big European city though. A must is going to Cork. The Blarney Stone is there. You can't go to Ireland without kissing the stone. lol. Ireland is not cheap. Especially if you travel to Northern Ireland where they use the Pound Sterling for currency. I travelled by bus. The buses are really nice. Very big travel network. I didn't rent a car because the gas was so expensive. B&B's are great. But you can stay at Hostels for alittle less. They do have private rooms with private bathrooms as well. Hostels are great. You meet alot of people and I got a lot of pointers on where to go and what to see for cheap. Killarney is a cute little town.

I could go on forever here so if you have any questions on what to see just PM me. And have fun...

OMG I kissed it...:duh. But its not true. My friend worked there and the locals are quite proud of their heritage and the castle. They have two people up there at all times helping you lean over the side and the castle is locked up tight at night. I saw the iron gates on the castle and at the entrance to the castle grounds. You're fine to kiss it. If you don't kiss it you won't have the gift of gab as it's said ;)
