SAN DIEGO -- Some type of explosion damaged a hotel under construction near Petco Park Monday, leaving at least eight people injured, two of them critically, authorities reported.

People in the area and miles away reported hearing a loud blast near the San Diego Convention Center on West Harbor Drive, near Eighth Avenue, shortly after 2 p.m., according to the San Diego Police Department.

Initial reports indicate that the explosion appeared to have been centered in rooms containing mechanical equipment, SDPD Officer Jim Johnson said.

Medics took the victims to a hospital for treatment of burns and other injuries.

The source of the apparent explosion was unknown, said Maurice Luque, a spokesman for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

They are reporting that there are about 8 injuries right now.

We had the explosion at the court house a couple weeks ago and the bomb threat at the 32nd street base where they are building the new housing and so it just seems all kinda weird to have so many of these things go on here right now.
Its on all our local stations right now.
