My dh has went active duty Army and he is leaving tomorrow for training at Ft. Leornardwood. WE are staying here. We currently have our house on the market and his graduation date is Aug. 19th. I have no idea when they will tell us where we'll be stationed so I am sorta stuck. My questions are..

Can I get on a base housing list as soon as they give him his orders?

How long is the wait for base housing?

Is living off base a better choice?

When the military moves you can they tow a vehicle? (we have 2 and ideally we'd like to drive only 1 of them together and not have to drive the truck)

What do they pay you for when moving?

Is anyone here an Army wife that can give me ideas on what bases are possible? What is good and what is bad? My dh was in the national guard for 12 years so he was out for 2 and just went active duty. He has kept his E-6 rank and basically they told him that he didn't have a choice in where he goes.. they will put him where they need an E-6 We did put our 3 choices and we picked Ft. Rucker, Ft. Benning, and Ft. Stewart. I hope we at least get one of those, but they did say they really can't go on that. This is all new to me so I am scared w/ him being gone for 13 weeks and having no idea where we'll be, where we'll live, my son will be in 1st grade so how do I look into schools when we don't know where we'll be? I am a total planner so this is really stressing me out. :sigh I am sure it all just works out somehow, but since it's all new to me and we've never been active duty before I have no idea what to expect.

Can I get on a base housing list as soon as they give him his orders? Most bases allow you to get on an inactive list, and as soon as your DH reports to his new duty station is when you can be put on an active waiting list

How long is the wait for base housing?depends on the base. Some bases are 6-12 months waits, while others you may get a house in 2 weeks.

Is living off base a better choice? ALso depends on the base, the BAH, all that sort of stuff.

When the military moves you can they tow a vehicle? (we have 2 and ideally we'd like to drive only 1 of them together and not have to driveNo they will not pay you to have a vehical shipped unless you are going over seas (including Hawaii and I believe Alaska)

What do they pay you for when moving? [B]If you move your self you get paid like so much for so many pounds. so much for gas and miles. if you have the military move you then they dont pay you anything, butyou can do a partial move, where as you could pack your vehicles with stuff and then you would
