I keep on seeing you ladies talk about it, so I finally bought it. What a cute cover for it too! :giggle

Might not be completely in my ball park yet, but it will come in handy really soon. Then DB will be like "How do you know all this stuff?"

Ohh, I have my sources. :wink

Anyone else think this is a good book?

I just read it last weekend and it was okay. There were some parts I didn't completely agree with but it's a fun read.

Personally, I found it to be dated and not all that useful. As for Ms. Levya - well, I have about as much use for her as I do her book. Glad you enjoyed it, though.

I loved that book too. Unfortunately I didn't know about it until after my first PCS as a wife. It would've REALLY come in handy with all of the run around I got. lol If I ever need to know anything I go to it.

I loved that book it helped alot when I first got married... the website that she owns is cinchouse.com... where Im also a memeber...but personally I think it is a lot more drama filled then here where it is more informational.

I've never been on her site but there were some things in the book that I thought were really off.

The one thing I really disagreed with (I even went back and reread that chapter to make sure I was understanding correctly) was the part where she said that getting involved in the FRG (formally known as FSG) or taking on some kind of position involving the command was going to "help" your husbands career. Maybe I misunderstood that part but that's how I took it and she couldn't be more wrong. If anything, you DON'T want somebody in any kind of support position that is there solely to help their husbands career. For one, that's probably the FIRST thing they tell you when wanting to become an ombudsman...becoming an ombudsmand is NOT going to garuantee your husband a promotion nor is it going to boost his chances of moving up quicker. And second, if that's what they're REALLY there for, then how much do they truly care about their position? Being an ombudsman can be really stressful and if your hearts not in it, you're not going to make a good one.

I thought some parts sounded unprofessional but then it's supposed to be funny so I guess it's meant to be written that way. I think most of the information in the book I learned just from everyday conversations or just going out and exploring. I think sites like this and maybe like hers could give you much of the same info if not better because it's coming from people who have been there done that.

I love to read so I didn't waste my time necessarily but it's not a book I would have to have I guess....just my 2 pesos!

I've that book, too and I had it for quite a while before I started reading it!
I think it's pretty neat and not a bad idea, but some things're kind a old and not updated!
I still enjoyed reading it!
My man was asking me all the time "Why would you get a book like that? Am I not giving you enough info or don't you know enough already?"
But after reading it himself - well at least most of it, he said the book wasn't bad at all and you can't gather enough info on things when it comes to the military and the things that go with being part of it!

He was even shocked that he didn't know some of the military acrononyms and shargon, and I keep messing with him constantly cause of it and pick up the book here and there and ask him what's this and what's that and then he says "Here you go with trying to mess with me again and to try to educate me about that crap!", but he does the same thing with me always!
Lol.
A friend of mine gave me the book from Meredith Levya "United by love - seperated by duty", but I didn't read that 1 yet!
Does anybody know how it's and can tell me anything abut it?
Regards and much love!

It def. needs to be updated. But it did have some info on special pay that my SO didn't know about that he could get, so it was helpful.

I think it is more her handling of things regarding OH and that whole mess that have left me with a VERY bad taste in my mouth.

I love that book! I posted on here once about it too a long time ago because I thought it was such a good read! The great part is that you can keep referring back to it.

And your DB will totally say that! Mine STILL does! :)

I got it when DB and I first started dating. I knew nothing about the military except they got deployed (ok I am exaggurating lol) but anyway it was a nice little intro into everything. I think I could probably find all the stuff in it else where (here) but it is nice having it in book form a guess.

she's the owner of a website (cinchouse.com, stands for Commander in Chief.. of the house..) that is difficult to navigate, prone to drama and totally biased towards certain branches. :lol

a few of the really, really OLD members here have a history with them. :lmao

My biggest issue is OH (Operation Homefront) -- funds have been mishandled, donations diverted to staff rather than those the organization is supposed to be there for, etc. This is not just guess work - there are those who have been in the organization and seen these things happen. Why do you think Roger Hedgecock, who actually started the program, has extricated himself from any/all involvement with it (he said as much when he made that decision, btw)?
As for the book itself - the information is little more than excerpts from publications readily available (FREE, no less) from any Navy Fleet and Family Support Center. Further, the publications at the NFFSCs would be more up-to-date as they are periodically updated. The same information would also be available at the centers for other services as well. In the end, you get a bunch of pamphlets put together and mixed with promotion for her/her site :dunno

I don't really have a history with the site I just found the site to leave a bad taste as well as the OH issue.

o

DITTO!! It's a huge mess and I'm frustrated that those involved are not being "punished" what was supposed to be a benefit and an aid turned into a cash cow IMO
